TOLEDO, Ohio – The University of Toledo men's tennis team opened its season with a victory on Friday by defeating Saint Francis 7-0 at Shadow Valley Tennis Club.

"As expected it wasn't the prettiest match, but it served its purpose to get us back on the court, kick the rust off, and compete together," head coach Al Wermer said.

Playing in their first match since March 6, 2020, the Rockets defended their home court successfully against the Red Flash.

On the No. 1 doubles court, junior Cole Shoults and sophomore Krzysztof Wetoszka teamed up to win 6-2, while sophomores Luis Kleinschnitz and Max Skaer took care of business on doubles court No. 3 by a score of 6-2.

In singles play, Shoults came away victorious on the top court by defeating SFU's Sebastian Pinos (6-4, 6-3), and his doubles partner Wetoszka dominated on court No. 3 in a 6-0, 6-0 win. Freshman Adam Kovac won his first collegiate match against Christian Banti (6-1, 6-3), while seniors Thawin Suksathaporn (6-3, 6-1, No. 2 court) and Filip Zupancic (6-0, 6-1, No. 6 court) both dispatched of their opponents as well. Rounding out singles competition was Skaer, who defeated Daniel Vinces on the No. 5 court by a score of 6-2, 7-6.
