Rockets Win Wild Extra-Inning Contest at UAB, 6-4

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. — The Toledo baseball team defeated UAB on Sunday, 6-4, in extra innings to win the weekend series.

The Rockets led for much of the game before the Blazers scored two in the bottom of the sixth and two in the seventh to knot the score at 4-4. With two outs in the top of the 10th and the bases loaded, sophomore Darryn Davis drove in two runs with a base hit to make it 6-4, the game-winning hit in a thrilling series finale.

Junior Kyle Bischoff was terrific on the mound. He tied a career high with 3.1 scoreless innings and struck out a career-best six batters while walking just one. Bischoff entered the game in the bottom of the seventh with runners on first and second and two outs and got the Blazers' two-hole hitter to harmlessly fly out to center field on his first pitch.

"Nobody needed that win more than we did," head coach Rob Reinstetle said. "We blew another lead, but the players battled like crazy to win that game. They never gave up. It would have been easy to throw in the towel with all the adversity we've faced late in games, but they never did. Kyle Bischoff gave us exactly what the doctor ordered, 3.1 innings of shutdown pitching. Darryn Davis got the huge knock to put us ahead in the 10th. To win a series against a quality opponent is a nice step forward for us leading into MAC play. Last night I walked out of the ballpark disappointed. Today I walked out very proud of our team."

Junior John Servello went 4-for-6 at the plate with three RBIs, tying a career best with four hits. Servello also threw out two UAB runners from right field. Senior Wyatt Jefferson gave the Rockets five shutout innings to start the day while striking out four.

The Rockets head to Nashville, Tenn. for a pair of midweek contests. They'll visit Belmont on Tuesday before playing at nationally-ranked Vanderbilt on Wednesday.

How it Happened
  • Toledo scored twice in the top of the first to take an early lead. Davis led off the game with a walk and Meyers reached on an error. They both scored on Servello's single that eked into left field to put the Rockets up 2-0.
  • Servello's infield single in the second made it 3-0. With the bases loaded and two outs, he hustled out a ground ball to the left side and the UAB third baseman was unable to get an out at any base.
  • Junior Lorenzo DeBrecht singled through the left side in the top of the third to bring home sophomore Ryan Thompson and push the Toledo lead to 4-0.
  • UAB scored two runs in the bottom of the sixth and two in the seventh to bring the score to a 4-4 tie. In the bottom of the seventh with runners on second and third with two outs, Chandler Simpson ripped an 0-2 pitch into left field that scored two runs and brought about the tie score.
  • Bischoff ended the eighth and ninth innings with strikeouts and UAB runners stranded on first and second base, respectively.
  • Sophomore Thomas Eitniear led off the top of the 10th with a double, and freshman Trey Wright and junior Nicky Winterstein then reached to load the bases. Davis sent a base hit into the gap that scored two runs easily and gave Toledo a 6-4 advantage.
  • After the Blazers led off the bottom of the 10th with a base hit, Bischoff struck out the next two batters and forced an easy groundout for the final out to clinch the victory for the Rockets.
