Toledo Swept in Doubleheader at Alabama State

MONTGOMERY, Ala.— Toledo and Alabama State played a doubleheader on Saturday and ASU came away with victories in both games.

The Rockets were walked off in both contests against the Hornets. Alabama State won game one on a walk-off RBI single into center field and they won game two on a wild pitch in the bottom of the ninth.

"Being walked off twice in one day is really hard to swallow," head coach Rob Reinstetle said. "We simply need to play better. We have to find a way to make a play, get a hit, or make a crucial pitch when it matters. Right now we are our own worst enemy and just beating ourselves."

The Rockets and Hornets wrap up their weekend with a Noon ET contest on Sunday afternoon.

Game 1: Alabama State 7, Toledo 6
The Rockets led from the top of the second until the bottom of the ninth, when ASU scored twice to win, 7-6, in walk off fashion. Junior Jordan Power threw six solid innings, striking out five while allowing two runs. Sophomore Jamie Myers and senior Nate Haugh saw time out of the bullpen.

At the plate sophomore Darryn Davis kept up his strong play, reaching base four times with two walks and two hits, including his first home run of the season. Freshman Trey Wright and junior John Servello both had two hits in game one of Saturday's doubleheader.

How it Happened
  • Toledo struck first, scoring twice in the top of the second. Wright's RBI single through the left side plated the first run of the game, then Davis walked with the bases loaded to bring home run number two. Both Davis and junior Nicky Winterstein forced long at-bats to draw two-out walks and keep the inning alive.
  • Alabama State cut the deficit in half with a run in the bottom of the second to make the score 2-1.
  • Junior Lorenzo DeBrecht turned an unassisted double play to end the bottom of the fourth, then reached on an error in the top of the fifth on a play that allowed two runs to score, giving the Rockets a 4-1 advantage.
  • The Hornets got a run back in the bottom of the sixth on a base hit to right field. A leadoff walk and back-to-back singles allowed the run to score for ASU.
  • Davis led off the top of the seventh with a home run to right field, putting Toledo up 5-2.
  • Alabama State's two-run homer to right field made it a one-run game, making the score 5-4.
  • Servello made it 6-4 in the top of the eighth with an RBI single, driving in DeBrecht.
  • The Hornets made some noise in the bottom half of the eighth. Two straight singles were followed by a run-scoring fielder's choice to bring in a run, cutting the Rockets' lead to one, 6-5.
  • ASU scored twice in the bottom of the ninth to shock the Rockets in walk-off fashion. The game-winning run came in to score on a base hit up the middle, handing the Hornets a 7-6 victory.

Game Two: Alabama State 3, Toledo 2
Toledo held Alabama State to just one hit in game two, but still found itself on the losing end of a 3-2 decision.

Senior Wyatt Jefferson gave the Rockets six solid innings on the mound, allowing just one run on one hit while striking out nine. Juniors Kyle Bischoff and Chris Meyers also saw time for Toledo; Bischoff struck out four across two innings. Davis and Servello both had two hits apiece at the plate.

How it Happened
  • Alabama State struck first, scoring in the bottom of the third to take a 1-0 lead.
  • Jefferson responded by striking out the side in the bottom of the fourth. The only hit he allowed in six innings of work was the RBI triple in the bottom of the third.
  • The Hornets extended their lead in the bottom of the seventh. A two-out, bases-loaded infield single scored a run to make it 2-0.
  • The Rockets got on the board in the top of the eighth inning. Davis scored on a wild pitch to make it 2-1, then Servello laced a two-out single to right field that scored Meyers and tied the game at 2-2.
  • Toledo put two runners on base in the top of the ninth, but couldn't push across the go-ahead run.
  • The Hornets completed their second walk-off win of the day by scoring on a wild pitch in the bottom of the ninth.
