TOLEDO, Ohio - The Toledo men's tennis team defeated Wayne State, 5-2, at Shadow Valley Tennis Club on Sunday, extending its home win streak to six matches.
"Wayne State is quite talented, but we came up with the answers." said head coach Al Wermer. "Our group has a secret sauce that is beyond description. They're going to be very dangerous as this season continues."
The Rockets started off with some intense action in doubles play, with all three courts going neck-and-neck. After Toledo dropped the match on the No. 2 court, senior Danilo Vukotic and junior Filip Zupancic delivered a 6-3 win over Dom Spicer/David Solar on the No. 1 court. Locked in a thrilling tie-break on the No. 3 court, senior Thawin Suksathaporn and freshman Luis Kleinschnitz eventually fell, 7-6(3), giving the Warriors the doubles point.
However, Toledo made up ground on the singles courts. Freshman Krzysztof Wetoszka tied the score at 1-1 with a two-set win on the No. 2 court over Pierre Renaudie. Vukotic posted a point from the No. 1 court, defeating Niklas Karcz, 6-1, 6-1 to give Toledo the lead. Shoults extended the Rockets' lead to 3-1, finishing off Luke Laws, 7-5, 6-3.
Three Rockets were pushed into third sets. Suksathaporn fell to Max Rink, 6-2, 4-6, 4-6 on the No. 4 court. With Toledo holding the lead at 3-2, the match came down to the No. 5 and No. 6 courts. Kleinschnitz out-battled Spicer 3-6, 6-4, 6-2 on the No. 5 court, sealing the win for the Rockets. On the No. 6 court, Zupancic added to the Rockets' victory, rallying from a set down to take the final two sets.
