TOLEDO, Ohio - The Toledo women's tennis team swept both Saint Francis and Findlay by identical 7-0 scores in dual-match action at Twos Athletic Club on Saturday.
"I'm proud of the energy the team brought tonight from start to finish," said head coach Tracy Mauntler. "We took definite steps forward today."
In the afternoon win over Saint Francis, the Rockets earned the doubles point with a 6-0 sweep on the No. 1 court from senior Dee Dee Leenabanchong/sophomore Eileen Carney and a 6-3 win on the No. 2 court from graduate student Zina Mehikic/freshman Sloane Teske. Toledo won by forfeit on the No. 3 court.
Teske, Leenabanchong, junior Patricia Panta, and freshman Laura Morera posted two-set victories on the No. 4, No. 1, No. 3 and No. 5 courts, respectively. Carney battled through three sets on the No. 2 court, defeating Laura Gutierrez 6-1, 4-6, 10-7. Toledo also took the point at No. 6 singles due to forfeit.
In the evening session vs. Findlay, Toledo earned the doubles point with wins on all three courts. Morera/Panta put away Samantha Sweet/Madison Arquette 6-2. On the No. 3 court Mehikic/Teske edged out Luciana Pereyra/Kayley Gimbel, 6-4 to clinch the doubles point. Leenabanchong/Carney came back from a 1-4 deficit to defeat Laura Brito/Eliza Kirov 6-4.
In singles action, Morera and Mehikic posted two-set victories on the No. 5 and No. 6 courts, respectively, to put the Rockets up 3-0 over Findlay. Teske clinched the match for Toledo with a 6-3, 6-1 win over Eliza Kirov on the No. 3 court. Carney posted a 6-2, 6-1 win on the No. 2 court and Panta put the Rockets up 6-0 over the Oilers after a 6-1, 6-0 win on the No. 4 court. Leenabanchong capped the Rockets' sweep with a 6-3, 6-2 win over Samantha Sweet on the No. 1 court.
