Rockets Face Wright State, Dayton, Ohio State This Weekend

TOLEDO, Ohio - The University of Toledo men's tennis team is set for a double feature in Dayton, Ohio on Friday as well as a match against No. 6 Ohio State on Sunday. The Rockets will kick things off Friday with a match against Wright State at 11:00 a.m. and close out competition at 7:00 p.m. against Dayton. Both matches will be played at the South Regency Tennis Center in Dayton. The Rockets will then travel to Columbus to take on the Buckeyes at the OSU Varsity Indoor Tennis Center at 6:00 p.m. on Sunday. 
 
Last Time Out
The Rockets went 0-2 on the road over the weekend, falling to Kentucky 6-1 on Thursday and Cleveland State 5-2 on Saturday. Luis Kleinschnitz posted the Rockets' sole point against the Wildcats with a three-set singles victory over Jonathan Sorbo from the No. 4 court. Kleinschnitz clinched another three-set victory on Saturday, defeating Cleveland State's Kade Mindry on the No. 5 court. Fellow freshman Max Skaer recorded a three-set victory on the No. 6 court. 
 
Last Time Against Wright State 
Toledo swept Wright State, 7-0, last season on Jan. 18's home opener. Serjen Olmedo/Cole Shoults and Tyler Gargas/Thawin Suksathaporn secured the doubles point. In singles play, Luka Vitosevic, Danilo Vukotic, Gargas, and Shoults swept their opponents in two sets while Vince Anzalone and Suksathaporn posted three-set victories. 
 
Scouting Wright State
Wright State opened the season with a 7-0 loss to sixth-ranked Ohio State. 
 
Returning for the Raiders is Param Pun, who went 13-13 (1-5 Horizon League) from the No. 1 court last season. 
 
The Raiders went 8-18 (0-6 Horizon League). WSU posted a four-match streak of 7-0 sweeps over Earlham, IU East, IU Southeast, and Niagara from Feb. 24 to Mar. 3. Wright State capped the season with a 7-0 sweep of Wittenberg.  
 
Last Time Against Dayton
The Rockets fell 5-2 to the Flyers last season on Jan. 21 in Toledo. Gargas/Suksathaporn posted a doubles victory on the No. 3 court, but it wasn't enough to secure the doubles point. Suksathaporn and Omar Espinosa posted Toledo's sole points, sweeping their opponents in two sets. 
 
Scouting Dayton
Dayton is 0-2 (0-0 A10) after falling 7-0 to Louisville and 5-0 to No. 6 ranked Ohio State. 
 
Redshirt junior Steven Karl returns for UD after going 19-9 in singles play last season. When partnered with Langford Hills, Karl posted an 8-3 doubles record. Sophomore Joe DeMarco posted a singles record of 15-7 during his rookie season with the Flyers and also posted an 8-3 record when paired with Langford Hills. 
 
Last season the Flyers went 16-8 (5-2 A10). UD posted a six-match winning streak that included four clean-sweeps in a row. No. 4 seeded Dayton defeated No. 5 seeded George Washington, 4-1, in the A10 tournament, but fell to No. 1 seeded VCU, 4-3, in the semifinals. 
 
Last Time Against Ohio State
Toledo fell to Ohio State, 4-0, last season on Jan. 27 in Columbus.  
 
Scouting Ohio State
Ohio State is 4-0 (0-0 Big 10). The Buckeyes have notched sweeps of Northern Kentucky, Dayton, Xavier and Wright State. Prior to their match with the Rockets, the Buckeyes will face Purdue on Jan. 25 and either Tulsa/Utah on Jan. 26 during the ITA Kickoff Weekend. 
 
The Buckeyes return two strong contenders: red-shirt senior Kyle Seelig and junior John McNally. NcNally went 20-4 (10-1 Big 10) in dual match singles play, primarily from the No. 5 court while Seelig posted an 18-5 (10-0 Big 10) from the No. 3 and No. 4 courts.  In doubles, McNally went 24-2 (9-0 Big 10) and Seelig went 18-3 (8-0 Big Ten).  
 
Last season OSU posted a record of 32-2 (11-0 Big 10). The Buckeyes posted 14 regular-season sweeps. In the Big 10 Tournament, OSU defeated Minnesota (4-0), Michigan (4-2), and Illinois (4-1) to tally their fourth-consecutive Big 10 Tournament title. In the NCAA Tournament, No. 1 ranked, No. 1 seeded Ohio State swept Cleveland State and No. 35 seeded Vanderbilt and defeated No. 16 seeded Columbia 4-1 in the first three rounds. The Buckeyes' tournament run was cut short by No. 9 seeded North Carolina, 4-2, in the quarterfinals.
