Women's Tennis Finishes Strong in First Day of BG Invitational

BOWLING GREEN, Ohio - The Toledo women's tennis team closed out the first day of tournament play at the Bowling Green Invitational in Bowling Green, Ohio, with two individual victories and one victory on the doubles court.

"These fall tournaments are used to gain experience under pressure," said head coach Tracy Mauntler. "I think we had some really solid performances today, but definitely saw some areas that need work. With four new players, I'm confident they will keep learning and improving."

Freshman Laura Morea defeated Bowling Green's Laura Maia Silveira 6-1, 6-0 to advance in the Frieda Falcon bracket. Later in the afternoon, sophomore Christina Fuller came out victorious from three-set battle with Northern Illinois' Fernanda Naves (2-6, 6-1, 6-1) to advance in the Freddie Falcon bracket.

Despite being knocked from the orange bracket by Oakland's Ava Thielman (6-4, 7-5), freshman Sloane Teske swept Oberlin's Isabelle Olaes 6-0, 6-0 in the brown bracket back draw.

The Rockets topped off Friday's play by posting one doubles victory. Fuller/Teske swept Oberlin's Hannah Keidan/Maja Shaw 6-0. Senior Dee Dee Leenabanchong/junior Patricia Panta were leading Oakland's Victoria Kurz/Thielman, 5-4, but their match was called due to lightning and will resume tomorrow morning.

Tournament play will resume at 8:30 tomorrow morning.
