Toledo Outlasted by Dayton in 12-9 Decision

It was an unusual game, with the Flyers scoring their 12 runs on just four hits, while UT pounded out 12 hits but walked a season-high 15 batters. Dayton took an early 4-0 lead after scoring four in the top of the first, and appeared to blow the game open with a five-run sixth inning. Trailing 12-4, Toledo plated five runs in the bottom of the ninth, all with two outs, and had the tying run come to the plate. But it proved to be too little too late.
Freshman Ryan Thompson went 3-for-5 at the plate and hit two home runs, the first Rocket to do that since Ross Adolph achieved that milestone last season (April 15, 2018). Sophomore Chris Meyers also went 3-for-5 and drove in three runs, and fellow sophomore Trace Hatfield hit his first home run of the season. Four pitchers saw action on Wednesday, with freshman Kyle Jones leading the way in innings pitched (3.1) and strikeouts (seven), both of which are career highs for him.
Both teams did plenty of damage with two outs; 15 of the 21 runs scored on Tuesday came with two outs.
Toledo visits Youngstown State on Wednesday before traveling to Ohio this weekend for a three-game conference series.
How it Happened
- Dayton scored four in the top of the first on just one hit to take an early 4-0 lead. The first run scored courtesy of a UT throwing error, and runs two and three came across on a double into left field. The final run of the inning crossed the plate on an RBI groundout to shortstop.
- Thompson got the Rockets on the board with a solo home run in the bottom of the second.
- The Flyers scored twice in the top of the third, with both runs coming via Toledo mistakes. A throwing error on a pickoff attempt allowed the first run to score, and a wild pitch brought home the second run.
- Dayton scored another run on a wild pitch in the top of the fourth to make it 7-1.
- Thompson's second home run of the game came in the bottom of the fourth and on an identical situation as his first homer: a 1-0 pitch with two outs that he sent soaring over the fence in right field.
- The Rockets pulled within three, 7-4, with a run in the bottom of the fifth. Meyers lined a two-out single into left field to drive home senior Brad Boss.
- Dayton's biggest offensive inning of the afternoon was the top of the sixth, when it scored five runs to take a 12-4 lead. A two-run homer started the scoring, and a two-run single to center field was then followed by an RBI single to left field.
- Sophomore Andrew Compton started off the bottom of the ninth with his first-career at-bat, smacking a single up the middle.
- With two outs, Meyers placed a ball down the line in left field that scored two runs and made the score 12-6. Hatfield then stepped to the plate in the next at-bat and blasted a three-run dinger to left field and made it 12-9.
- Toledo had runners on first and second and the tying run at the plate, but couldn't keep the rally going any longer, with a strikeout ending the game.
