Toledo, Ohio - The Toledo softball team (12-20) split a twinbill with Akron (8-21) today to win the three-game series and move to 4-4 in Mid-American Conference play. UT fell 11-5 in game one but rallied to take a 6-1 victory in the nightcap to go 2-1 vs. the Zips over the weekend. Senior Kaitlyn Bergman had an impressive day as she went 4-for-6 with a solo homer, two walks, and two runs scored. Sophomore Erin Hunt added her eighth victory of the year after going the distance in game two, throwing a no-hitter through six innings.
 
How it happened
Game 1:
The Rockets had a rough start to the day as the Zips rallied back from a 2-0 deficit in game one to tie the weekend series at 1-1. Akron scored in every inning after the second while Toledo left 12 runners stranded.

• Toledo opened the scoring in the second inning thanks to a solo homer from Bergman that was followed up by an RBI single from freshman Aubrey Reed to put UT up 2-0.
• The Zips tied the score in the third thanks to an RBI single from Kimberly Rodriguez; an error on the catcher during the play brought in the tying run. Akron then took a two-run lead when Jordan Crews hit a single to right field that brought in two more.

• Akron put a pair of runs up in the fourth on a two-run homer from Sydney Jascoe that made things 6-2. The Zips then added another insurance run in the fifth on an RBI single from Samantha Malik.
• Back-to-back doubles in the fifth from senior Megan Choate and Bergman cut he margin to 7-3.
• Another single from Akron in the top of the sixth brought home Jascoe, but the Rockets answered in the bottom of the frame when senior Katie Cozy singled with the bases loaded to score sophomores Raelyn Nyren and Ami Ill, making the score 8-5.
• Three more runs by the Zips in the seventh would end up being the nail in the coffin for Toledo as Akron scored the final runs of the afternoon off a three-run homer from Jascoe to set up the rubber match.

Game 2:

• Toledo once again opened scoring with two runs in the second. Sophomore Bekah Yenrick ripped an RBI double. Sophomore Taylor Weekly later moved to third on a single from sophomore Brittney Davis and then came home following by an error by the Zips' shortstop
• Toledo's third run came in the fourth frame off a single from junior Samantha Golden that brought home Reed.
• The Rockets capped off their day with a three-run fifth inning. A bases-loaded wild pitch allowed junior Morgan Paaverud to come in, and a sac fly from Reed brought in another. The final run came on an RBI single from Davis to right center.
• The Zips ruined Hunt's no-hitter in the top of the sixth inning when Rodriguez opened the frame with a left field single. Akron broke up the shutout when Macky Mitchner popped an RBI single to right center.
