Rockets Unload in Nightcap to Split Doubleheader with BG

Bowling Green, Ohio - The Toledo softball team split a doubleheader with Bowling Green today, falling 3-2 in game one but rallying to a 13-6 stomping in the nightcap. Senior Megan Choate was arguably the offensive player of the day as she combined to go 4-for-8 with three runs, five RBIs and one walk. Choate and sophomore Kylie Norwood both also reached the 20-run mark today, 10 more than anyone else on the UT squad. The Rockets collectively earned 15 runs and 18 hits today.

Game 1:
  • The first outing of the day was a quiet affair as three of the game's runs came in the first inning and the final two came in the fourth and sixth.
  • The Rockets opened the scoring thanks to a two-out bases-loaded HBP for freshman Aubrey Reed that brought in Choate.
  • The Falcons responded in the bottom of the inning after also loading the bases following an error and two singles. A wild pitch from sophomore Erin Hunt allowed Alex Sorgi to sprint in, and the go-ahead run came three batters later from a bases-loaded walk.
  • BGSU plated its final run of the game in the fourth when with runners at the corners Taylor Blevins popped a single past the shortstop to bring in one.
  • Toledo notched its final run in the sixth when a Norwood double to center field brought sophomore Raelyn Nyren home from second. Unfortunately, UT left Norwood stranded following the score and went down in order in the seventh to close out the contest.

Game 2:
Game two was a shootout from the beginning and featured scoring in every inning except the first and fourth. Choate collected five RBIs to  tie the UT record for second-most RBIs in a single game. Seven different Rockets were credited with runs and hits in the contest.
  • The Rockets jumped on the Falcons with a big second inning after going down in order to open the game. A double from senior Kaitlyn Bergman and walks from Nyren and freshman Briana Robeson loaded the bases, setting up freshman Aubrey Reed's RBI single that scored Bergman.
  • Norwood then singled to center to bring home Nyren and Robeson, and a three-run homer from Choate gave Toledo a comfortable 6-0 lead.
  • Bowling Green put points on the board in the third. With the bases loaded, Kellie Natham singled up the gut to score two. BGSU added another in the fifth when Natham stepped back up and drilled a solo homer over the left-field fence for a 6-3 cushion.
  • Toledo increased its lead in the top of the sixth thanks to a double from senior Katie Cozy that brought in sophomore Taylor Weekly. An error allowed Choate to scoot in.
  • The flood gates opened in Toledo's favor in the top of the seventh. Nyren doubled and Robeson walked to start the frame. Reed came up and singled up the middle to score Nyren. Robeson came home off a single to right from Weekly. Norwood singled to the shortstop to score Reed, and a Choate double brought around Weekly and Norwood.
  • BGSU added a final run off a solo homer from Madi McCoy, but the next three batters went 1-2-3 to end the game in UT's favor.
