TOLEDO, Ohio— The University of Toledo volleyball team played its final match of the season on Saturday night, falling to Eastern Michigan in three sets.
Senior Zoe Birnbrich played her final match for the Rockets and was predictably outstanding. She tallied 10 kills on 17 attacks and hit .529, bringing her career hitting percentage to .308. She ends her career with the second-highest hitting percentage in program history, and her .334 hitting percentage this season is the third-best ever in a single season by a Rocket. Birnbrich now has the third and fourth-best single-season hitting percentages in school history.
Junior Rhyen Neal ended the night with a match-high 19 digs, bringing her season total to 466, eighth-most in a season ever. Her 4.31 digs/set average this season also cracks the program's single-season Top 10.
Freshman Olivia Vance hit .375 and added nine kills and five blocks, while sophomore Maddie Fogg led the team with 20 assists.
The Rockets end the 2019 season with a record of 9-19.
Set 1 (EMU, 25-17)
The first set of the night was also the only one to end in regulation, with the Eagles coming out on top 25-17. EMU jumped out to a 9-2 lead and did not look back from there. The Rockets did pull as close as 12-10 after a 5-0 run, but it was not enough to overcome Eastern Michigan's attack. The Eagles hit .406 in the first set.
Set 2 (EMU, 29-27)
The longest set of the night started off with EMU taking a 10-5 lead. The Rockets stormed back, though, to take their first lead of the night thanks to an 8-1 run that featured three kills from Birnbrich. With the score sitting at 13-10, Eastern Michigan scored four straight points to retake the lead at 14-13. The two teams traded blows and Toledo eventually found itself at set point with a chance to tie the match at 1-1. Leading 24-22, the Rockets surrendered the next three points to fall behind 25-24. Junior Emma Swope registered a kill and teamed up with Vance for a huge block to make it 26-25, but that's the last time Toledo would have a lead in the second set. The Eagles scored four of the last five points to win 29-27 and take a 2-0 lead in the match.
Set 3 (EMU, 26-24)
The final set of the night also needed extra time, with Eastern Michigan winning 26-24. Toledo took a quick 3-1 lead and led for much of the set. Holding a 20-18 lead, the Rockets fell into a 20-20 tie after EMU scored two straight points. After a timeout, Toledo responded with three straight points to make the score 23-20, a run that ended with two straight blocks from Swope and Vance. The Rockets led 24-21 and nearly forced a fourth set, but Eastern Michigan scored five straight points to win the set and the match.
