TOLEDO, Ohio — The University of Toledo volleyball team hosted MAC East foe Miami on Saturday night, falling in three sets to the RedHawks.
Senior Zoe Birnbrich and freshman Ryann Jaqua led the Rockets with five kills apiece through the three sets. Olivia Vance recorded four terminations and Chloee Kleespies and Liz Beasley each had three. Junior Rhyen Neal had a team-high 12 digs and Jaqua added 11.
Toledo (7-15, 0-10 MAC) travels to Ball State on Thursday, Oct 31 for a 7:00 p.m. match and will host Akron on Saturday, Nov. 2 at 5:00 p.m.
Set 1 (Miami, 25-14)
Miami took an early lead over the Rockets in the first set, starting the match off on a 7-2 run and didn't look back. The Rockets pulled as close as 13-11 but couldn't overcome Miami's early lead. A 6-1 run put Miami ahead, 19-12, and the RedHawks were able to cruise to a 25-14 win in the first set to take a 1-0 lead in the match. Kleespies and freshman Olivia Vance each tallied two kills in the first set.
Set 2 (Miami, 25-14)
The second set followed a similar script compared to the first, with the RedHawks winning 25-14. Miami took a 10-3 lead over the Rockets that quickly grew to 16-7. Aside from scoring the first point of the set, Toledo never held the lead in the second frame. Toledo did hit .250 in the second set, its best of the night, but was unable to contain the Miami attack. The RedHawks hit .441 in the second frame and won by an identical score to the first set to take a 2-0 lead in the match. Five of the seven Miami service aces came in the second set.
Set 3 (Miami, 25-18)
The RedHawks took the lead to start the third set and did not look back. Miami took an 8-3 lead to start things off and the Rockets were not able to overcome the early deficit in the third set. Toledo used a late 5-1 run to pull within two, 19-17, a scoring spurt that was capped by a kill from Jaqua. But it was too little too late for Toledo, as Miami would go on to win 25-18 and take Saturday's match in three sets.
