Track & Field Lifts Off for GVSU Open on Friday

Toledo, Ohio – The University of Toledo women's track & field team will be heading to Grand Valley State University in Allendale, Mich. on Friday, Jan. 25 for the GVSU Open. Field events will start at 2:45 p.m. with the high jump and running events will start at 3:00 p.m. with the 60m hurdle prelims.

The Rockets are returning to the track after a 70-59 victory over Bowling Green last weekend.

In field events, the Rockets took the top five spots in the high jump, led by junior Atalia da Silva, who posted a jump of 1.63m. Sophomore Janell Rowe clinched first in the long jump (5.55m) and triple jump (11.38m) while senior Deja Martin took second in the long jump (5.31m) and third in the triple jump (10.51m). Senior Katie Dewey took second in the shot put with a throw of 14.18m and took third in the weight throw (17.70m).
The Rockets dominated the distance events. In the mile run, freshman Claire Steigerwald led the pack, clinching first in 5:06.38 while senior Joan Jepkirui took second in 5:08.62. Senior Petronela Simiuc took first in the 800m with a time of 2:13.21, with senior Olivia Chinn following closely behind and taking second in 2:20.20. The Rockets took the top five spots in the 3000m run, with junior Athena Welsh taking the lead (9:37.72) followed by senior Janelle Noe (9:47.75), senior Jennifer Lichter (9:53.26), sophomore Stephanie Sherman (10:10.96), and freshman Elisabeth LaPrad (10:40.80).

In the 60m event, senior Shanice Williams clinched first with a time of 7.58. In the 200m event, senior Nautica Hill took third with a time of 25.70. The Rockets also competed in the 4x400 meter relay, where senior Christina Johnson, freshman Holly Nation, freshman Rayna Horner, and sophomore Alaysia Grose took second with a time of 4:03.23.

In December, Welsh and Noe competed in the 5000m run at GVSU Holiday Open, where Welsh took third (16:24.28 – personal record) and Noe took 23rd (17:39.68). The Rockets as a team last visited GVSU for the 2017 Bob Eubanks Open, where they took second place with a score of 175.5 points.
