Toledo, Ohio – The men's cross country team traveled to Bowling Green for the Mel Brodt Collegiate Opener on Friday and landed two runners in the top five.
Junior Dismas Koech took third (15:40.3) with sophomore Jake Papish following close behind, taking fourth with a time of 15:40.9 in the 5K event. Freshman Joel Duffield missed out on the top five by eight seconds, securing sixth with a time of 15:50.0.
"We tried to be more aggressive today," said head coach Linh Nguyen. "Our first three guys did a really good job of getting out there and getting in the mix of it and racing head to head with who they were with. Our other guys just kind of let the gap happen at one point, and they kind of got out of it. Once you're out of that pack, it's tough to really keep it rolling."
The Rockets now face a three-week training period before they head into their first 8K race of the season.
"Hopefully we can take what we've been doing and translate it over an additional 3K and have good results," said Nguyen. "I think our older guys are a bit more high-mileage guys so the longer distance suits them better."
The men's cross country team's next competition will be the All-Ohio Championships on Sept. 29 at Norton, Ohio.
