Toledo, Ohio— The Toledo women's volleyball team was swept by Eastern Michigan on Saturday at home. The loss drops the Rockets' record to 7-8 (2-2 MAC).
Toledo had won six of its last seven matches entering tonight, but had those winning ways temporarily halted by the Eagles. EMU won the first two sets handily and, while UT played it closer in the third set, it was not enough to overtake a powerful Eastern Michigan attack. The Eagles hit .312 on Saturday compared to Toledo's .189.
Chloee Kleespies had a team-high seven kills, while Alexis Falzone registered a match-high four blocks. Maurissa Leonard (22) and Rhyen Neal (11) cracked double-digits in digs, and Carly Townsend recorded 21 assists.
Next up for Toledo are two road matches: a Thursday night affair at Ball State and a Saturday night showdown at Akron.
Set 1 (EMU 25-14)
The first set was all Eastern Michigan from start to finish. The Eagles took an 11-3 lead to start things off, and their lead quickly grew to 21-9. The final score would end up being 25-14 in what would be EMU's best offensive set and Toledo's worst. The Eagles hit .356 and the Rockets hit .158.
Set 2 (EMU 25-16)
It was much of the same in the second frame, with Toledo falling behind, 10-3, to start off the set. The Rockets didn't let the Eagles pull away so quickly this time, pulling within five, 16-11. Eastern Michigan did, eventually, pull away though; six of the final nine points went the way of the Eagles and the Rockets found themselves on the losing end of a 25-16 decision.
Set 3 (EMU 25-21)
The third set was the closest of the night and, when Toledo took a 2-1 lead, it was the first time all night they had done so. The Rockets would actually jump out to a 4-1 advantage, built off the strength of back-to-back blocks. Toledo led as late as 10-9, but that would be the last time it would be out in front of Eastern Michigan. The two teams held ties at 11-11, 12-12, 13-13, and 14-14, but once EMU went ahead 15-14 it would not relinquish its lead.
