Toledo, Ohio - The Toledo women's track and field team is set to compete in the Jesse Owens Track Classic hosted by Ohio State this weekend. The two-day meet runs April 20-21 and takes place in Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium on the campus of OSU. Competition is set to begin Friday at 2:00 p.m. with the women's hammer throw. Running events will start at 6:30 p.m. with the women's 5K. Saturday kicks off at 10:30 a.m. with the women's shot put. Live stats will be available via Finish Timing here.
"We're getting down to the main part of the season now so we're looking to get more Mid-American Conference qualifying performances and improve on what we have," head coach Linh Nguyen said. "For this meet we're also looking to continue to work on technique and race tactics."
Nguyen added that he has a handful of sprinters, distance runners and jumpers who he suspects are "on the cusp of big performances."
Sprinting for Toledo are juniors Nautica Hill and Christina Johnson, along with sophomore Tori Thompson. Hill is currently ranked ninth in the conference for the 200m (24.45) and Thompson is 22nd with a time of 12.26. Johnson holds the 24th spot in the 100m with a time of 12.28.
Junior distance runner Olivia Chinn is one of the highest ranked Toledo student-athletes and is the third of four Rockets sitting in the top-four of the 3,000 steeplechase. Chinn is ranked fourth in the event, and her 10:44.14 sits just behind sophomore Athena Welsh (first, 10:22.70) and senior Stephanie Barlow (third, 10:26.48).
Jumpers sophomore Atalia da Silva and freshman Karoline Steppin are expected to have big break-out performances soon as well. Da Silva is seventh in the MAC for the high jump (1.65m) while Steppin is seventh in the triple jump (38' 9").
The Rockets are coming off the Ball State Challenge where junior Katie Dewey set a new personal record with her first-place finish in the shot put (15.08m). Bellman also had a strong day, setting a personal-record in the hammer throw and earning season-best distances in the discus and javelin events. Toledo earned five first-place finishes in Muncie, Ind. and had 20 student-athletes finish top-five in their respective events.
