Megan Miller returns a volley during a doubles match against NIU

Toledo, Ohio - The Toledo women's tennis team (11-5, 1-2 MAC) secured its first win of the Mid-American Conference season with a 6-1 victory over Northern Illinois (5-13, 0-4 MAC) today. The day saw UT sweep the doubles point and win three singles matches in two sets.

"We've played well at home lately so I expected them to be ready for this," head coach Tracy Mauntler said after the match. "There was a bit more motivation to win against NIU because they beat us last year and they're the reason we didn't get into the MAC Tournament. I think the girls remember what that felt like so they showed up and really dominated. The energy was good and it bled over from court-to-court and everyone felt the positive vibe we had going today."

The Rockets started the day by claiming the doubles point. Senior Sidnay Huck and junior Kokoro Chishaki combined in the No. 1 spot to win 6-2. Senior Megan Miller and junior Thalita Rodrigues blanked their opponents 6-0 in the No. 3 spot to secure the doubles point for Toledo.

UT continued dominating into singles competition with three matches ending after two sets. Sophomore Dee Dee Leenabanchong led the way in the No.1 spot, sweeping her opponent 7-5, 6-1. Senior Colleen O'Brien played lights out in the No. 3 spot, defeating her opponent 6-1, 6-1. Rodrigues followed suit in the No. 6 spot, downing her opponent 6-1, 6-4.

UT returns to action Friday, April 6 when the team hosts Bowling Green at 1:00 p.m. on the UT Varsity Tennis Courts before traveling to Ball State on Sunday, April 8 for a 1:00 p.m. road contest.
