TOLEDO, Ohio - The Toledo softball team closes its non-conference tournament schedule with the Eagle Classic hosted by Morehead State on March 16-17. The Rockets will play a doubleheader against East Tennessee State (11:00 a.m.) and Morehead State (1:00 p.m.) on Friday, followed by a twin bill with Oakland (11:00 a.m.) and ETSU (3:00 p.m.) on Saturday. All games will be played at MSU's University Field.
Toledo (12-11)
The Rockets won their last two games of a difficult West Coast road trip over Bryant, 5-2, and Montana, 6-5. The pair of wins to close the spring break trip snapped a six-game losing skid.Â
The Midnight Blue & Gold are led by the reigning Mid-American Conference West Division Player of the Week in freshman Bailey Curry. Curry leads the team with six home runs, 19 RBIs, 10 walks and three doubles. Curry became the third Rocket this season to earn a weekly award from the conference.Â
In the circle, junior Heather Webb top the squad with a 7-5 record and a 2.27 ERA in 61.2 innings. Junior Kailey Minarchick has picked up five wins and is second on the team with a 3.19 ERA.
The Rockets hold a 12-10 record all time against Oakland, but trail ETSU, 2-0, and Morehead State, 5-2, in program history.
East Tennessee State (9-11)
Taylor Wright and Tiffany Laughren have led the Buccaneers to a 9-11 record after 20 games this season. Wright tops the club with a .389 (14-for-36) average and a .488 on-base percentage. Laughren comes in to the weekend hitting .268 (15-for-56) with a team-best five home runs and 13 RBIs.
Maggie Ogle has five wins and five losses at the center of the diamond this year in 58.1 innings. As a team, ETSUÂ holds a 4.36 ERA.
Morehead State (15-4)
Toledo will look to break the Eagles seven-game winning streak when the two teams meet on Saturday. Morehead State defeated the MAC's Central Michigan twice and Buffalo to start the season and also have a win over Rutgers of the Big Ten. MSU's streak dates back to a 4-0 loss on Feb. 24 against Kennesaw State.
Paige Scruggs leads the Eagles in many offensive categories including average (.396), RBIs (16), doubles (6) and slugging percentage (.623) at this point in the season. Ace pitcher Chelsea McManaway is 10-1 with a 1.44 ERA and 96 strikeouts. Her 10 wins and 96 punch outs ranks among the top 25 in each category nationally.Â
Oakland (5-12)
The Golden Grizzlies won their season opener over Florida Atlantic before dropping seven of their next eight games. Oakland matched up with the No. 1 team in the land in Florida for a pair of games and have also played No. 15 Oklahoma State this season.
