Toledo, Ohio – The University of Toledo men's tennis team plays home and away matches this weekend against Wayne State and Notre Dame. The Rockets host the Warriors on Friday, Feb. 23 at 6:00 p.m. at Shadow Valley Tennis Club. UT then travels to South Bend, Ind. for a 5:00 p.m. contest on Sunday against the Fighting Irish at the Eck Tennis Pavilion.
Â
Head coach Al Wermer said his team is focusing on keeping a strong mental approach and sticking together as a team.
Â
"Our mindset is about improving our games and staying positive," Wermer said. "That's what's so great about this group: each guy has a role, and they always have each other's back."
Â
Toledo is coming off losses to Marquette and Green Bay last weekend, but Wermer isn't putting too much weight on his team's record at this point in the season.
Â
"We've lost a lot of matches, but our schedule has been very challenging," said Wermer. "This year we eliminated many of the matches that we typically won in the past."Â Â
Â
LAST MEETINGS
The Rockets last match against Wayne State was in February of 2017. Toledo won 5-2 thanks to a sweep in the doubles competition and strong singles play. Omar Espinosa and Stephen Miller recorded their fifth-straight victory at No. 2 doubles while Stjepan Sisko notched his eighth-straight victory at the No. 1 singles spot.
Â
Toledo's last match against Notre Dame came in 2014 when the No. 29 Fighting Irish bested the Rockets 7-0.
Â
COMING UP
The Rockets head down to Lake Nona, Fla. for a UT alumni match on Saturday, March 3 at 2 p.m. The Rockets return to action three days later when they take on Embry-Riddle at 3:30 p.m. in Daytona Beach.
