TOLEDO, Ohio - Toledo (6-2) will look to continue its winning ways when it entertains No. 2 Notre Dame (7-1) on Saturday, Dec. 8. Tip-off time is set for 1:00 p.m. in Savage Arena and will be shown on ESPN+.
The Rockets have begun the season by winning six of their first eight games. UT has now started a season with a record of 6-2 or better in two of the last three years, on 15 occasions overall in school history, and four times under 11th-year head coach Tricia Cullop.
Toledo has been nearly unbeatable in Savage Arena under Coach Cullop with a 126-36 (.778) ledger, including a perfect 2-0 mark this season. The Midnight Blue & Gold has outscored the opposition by a whopping 29.5 ppg (74.5-45.0) in its home contests this year.Â
UT will be challenged by defending national champion Notre Dame, which will be making its second appearance in Savage Arena over the last three seasons. Two years ago, the Midnight Blue & Gold dropped an 85-68 decision to the Fighting Irish on Dec. 18, 2016 before 5,697 fans in Savage Arena, the sixth-largest crowd in program history.
Toledo, which is in the midst of a four-game winning streak, is coming off a 65-60 victory at Horizon League member Cleveland St. Â (3-6) on Wednesday in the Wolstein Center.
Senior Kaayla McIntyre paced Toledo with a game-high 23 points against the Vikings, to go along with a squad-tying best seven boards and two rejections. McIntyre shot 10-of-17 from the field and 3-of-4 from the charity stripe to surpass the 20-point plateau for the second time this year.
The Rockets also received 11 points from junior Mariella Santucci, eight by senior Mikaela Boyd and six each from sophomore Tyra Carlsten-Handberg and sophomore Tanaya Beacham to extend their winning streak to 10-consecutive games versus Horizon League opponents.
As a team, UT shot 43.5 percent (27-of-62) from the floor and a season-high 81.8 percent (9-of-11) from the free throw line.
UT did a bulk of its scoring close to the basket, finishing with a commanding 50-22 edge in points in the paint.
One of the keys for Toledo winning four-straight games has been the play of its defense. The Rockets have allowed the opposition to shot only 34.9 percent (86-of-246) from the field, including 27.9 percent (24-of-86) from three-point land and average 59.0 points.
Overall this year, UT possesses a balanced attack with McIntyre, Santucci, Boyd and junior Sara Rokkanen averaging 15.1, 11.5, 9.1 and 8.1 ppg, respectively. This quartet accounts for 67.1 percent (351-of-523) of Toledo's scoring.
The Rockets will square off against a Notre Dame team that suffered an 89-71 setback to now top-ranked Connecticut on Dec. 2 at home. Jackie Young and 2017-18 AP second-team All-American Arike Ogunbowale led the Fighting Irish with 18 and 17 points in a rematch of last year's Final Four. Ogunbowale added a team-high 10 boards and five helpers to post her first double-double on the year. Notre Dame entered the UConn game ranked No. 1 in the country and fell to No. 2 following the loss.
Notre Dame features an offense with all five starters averaging at least 12.5 points per game led by Ogunbowale's 24.3 ppg. The Fighting Irish are a perfect 4-0 away from home this season.
Toledo and Notre Dame will meet for the third time in the last four years and ninth time in the overall series. The Fighting Irish have won the last four match-ups against the Rockets and lead the all-time series, 5-3.
The Rockets' last win in the series occurred on Jan. 6, 1990 when they registered a 70-69 home victory.Â
UT is 11-15 (.423) all-time against teams from the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) (1-1 vs. Boston College; 1-2 vs. Duke; 0-1 vs. Florida St.; 0-1 vs. Louisville; 1-3 vs. Miami (Fla.); 3-5 vs. Notre Dame; 3-0 vs. Pittsburgh; 1-1 vs. Syracuse; 1-1 vs. Virginia), including 3-4 (.429) under head coach Tricia Cullop.
The last ACC school Toledo played was No. 5 Louisville in the second round of the 2017 Preseason WNIT. The Rockets dropped a 90-55 decision against the nationally ranked Cardinals.
Following tomorrow's match-up against the Fighting Irish, the Rockets will entertain America East Conference member Stony Brook (7-1) on Tuesday, Dec. 18. The opening tip against the Seawolves is slated for 7:00 p.m. in Savage Arena and will be shown on ESPN3. UT and SBU will meet for the first time on the hardwood.
Earlier this year, the Rockets dropped a 73-59 decision at AEC member Maine on Nov. 10 in their season opener.
