Rockets Look to Continue Success at MAC Championships This Weekend

TOLEDO, Ohio — Toledo will compete in the 2017 Mid-American Conference Women's Golf Championships this weekend in Silver Lake, Ohio. The three-day tournament includes 10 schools and will be held on Friday-Sunday, April 21-23 at the par-72, 6,177-yard Silver Lake Country Club. The event will consist of three rounds with 18 holes being played each day.

    The Rockets have notched eight Top Three showings in 11 tournaments this season, including a 12-stroke victory at the Ball State Sunshine Invitational on Feb. 10-11 and a first-place tie at the Red Rocks Invitational on March 4-5. UT also has tallied runner-up finishes at Ball State's Cardinal Classic (Sept. 19-20), the FIU Pat Bradley Invitational (Oct. 23-25), Mercer's Idle Hour Collegiate Championship (Oct. 31-Nov. 1) and last weekend's Indiana Invitational, as well as third-place showings at the Rocket Classic (Oct. 10-11) and the Little Rock/ASU Invitational (March 27-28).

    Sophomore Pinyada Kuvanun leads the Rockets with a 74.8 stroke average, just ahead of classmate Pimchanok Kawil's 75.8 scoring mark. Freshman Saranlak Tumfong and junior Napaphan Phongpaiboon rank third and fourth on the team with 76.9 and 77.2 averages, respectively.

    The Rockets have finished as the runner-up in three of the last four MAC Championships and have placed in the top three in six of the last seven years. UT's showings in the event have included three second-place (2006, 2013, 2014, 2016), seven third-place (1999, 2002, 2003, 2008, 2010, 2012, 2015), four fourth-place (2000, 2001, 2004, 2007), two fifth-place (2005, 2009) and one sixth-place (2011) finish.

    Kent State is the only school to win the MAC Championship in its 18-year history and is the favorite to win the tournament again this year. The Golden Flashes are ranked No. 15 in Golfstat's national rankings followed by Toledo (98), Eastern Michigan (125), Northern Illinois (130), Western Michigan (152), Akron (156), Ball State (158), Ohio (173), Bowling Green (210) and Central Michigan (230).
