TOLEDO, OH - Toledo (12-6, 3-4 MAC) will hold its 11th-annual 'Rockets for the Cure' day on Saturday, Jan. 28, as the Midnight Blue & Gold entertains reigning Mid-American Conference West Division champion Central Michigan (14-5, 6-1 MAC) at 4:30 p.m. in Savage Arena. The MAC West Division showdown will help benefit the Susan G. Komen for the Cure of Northwest Ohio, the Eleanor N. Dana Cancer Center and the University of Toledo Center for Health and Successful Living. The Rockets encourage everyone in attendance to wear pink in support of cancer research.
Tomorrow's contest is the second of a doubleheader, as the Rocket men's team will take on Northern Illinois at 2:00 p.m.
The goal of 'Rockets for the Cure' is to provide cancer education to the community, provide encouragement to the survivors fighting now and their families, celebrate the survivors that have won the fight, remember the ones that were less fortunate and pack Savage Arena with 5,000 or more Rocket Fans in pink.
From when the doors open up until the end of halftime, fans are encouraged to take part in the silent auction on the West Concourse. All proceeds benefit the University of Toledo Dana Cancer Center, Susan G. Komen Northwest Ohio and University of Toledo Center for Health and Successful Living.
The Rockets will once again wear pink uniforms for the game. Guest emcee Chrys Peterson and the Rockets will hold a live jersey auction immediately following the contest. All proceeds benefit the University of Toledo Dana Cancer Center and Susan G. Komen Northwest Ohio.
Last season, the Rockets raised $11,016.96 for cancer research, marking the seventh-straight season they have collected at least $11,000. In addition, five of UT's uniforms that were auctioned off after the contest went for more than $500, including a high of $800 for Ana Capotosto.
Toledo, which is coming off its bye, most recently dropped a 70-60 road decision at Kent State last Saturday, Jan. 21.
Senior Janice Monakana paced the Rockets with 19 points, seven rebounds and three steals against the Golden Flashes, followed by freshman Mariella Santucci with 10 points and a season-high 11 assists to post her first collegiate double-double.
UT also received a season-high nine points from sophomore Halee Printz and six from sophomore Sarah St-Fort, but it was not enough as the Midnight Blue & Gold saw its eight-game winning streak against KSU (10-9, 4-3 MAC) come to an end.
Toledo was also without the services of junior Jay-Ann Bravo-Harriott, who sat out the game after suffering an injury against Ohio in the fourth quarter on Jan. 18. Bravo-Harriott is listed as questionable against CMU on Saturday.
As a team, the Rockets were limited to 33.3 percent (25-of-75) from the floor, including 14.3 percent (3-of-21) from beyond the arc, and 53.8 percent (7-of-13) from the free throw line to drop their third straight game.
Toledo is fueled offensively by the quartet of Bravo-Harriott, Monakana, sophomore Mikaela Boyd and sophmore Kaayla McIntyre, who are averaging 11.8, 11.1, 10.5 and 9.2 ppg, respectively.
UT, which sports a 6-4 record at home this season, will take on a well-rested Central Michigan team which had its six-game winning streak snapped with a 67-56 road loss at Buffalo last Saturday. Tinara Moore led CMU with 21 points, seven boards and four helpers.
The Chippewas are currently leading the MAC in overall field-goal percentage (.465, 202-of-434) and three-point field-goal percentage (.421, 53-of-126), as well as ranking second in scoring offense (83.0 ppg) in league games, while Toledo is first in scoring defense (60.7 ppg) and three-point field-goal percentage defense (.254, 32-of-126), as well as sitting fourth in overall field-goal percentage defense (.389, 150-of-386).
Central Michigan, which is 4-4 away from home this season, features four players scoring at least 12.0 points per game and is led by MAC Player of the Year candidate Presley Hudson's 19.1 ppg, 3.2 rpg, 4.4 apg and 1.8 spg.
UT and CMU will meet for the first of two contests during the 2017 MAC campaign and the 78th time overall. The Rockets will visit Mount Pleasant on Saturday, Feb. 18 for a 1:00 p.m. tip time in McGuirk Arena.
Toledo leads the all-time series, 47-30, and has won the last four meetings against its division foe. A year ago, UT swept the regular-season series, securing an 81-79 overtime road victory (Feb. 20) and a 76-72 home win (March 2).
The Rockets also maintain a 26-11 advantage in games played in Savage Arena and has won eight of the last 10 meetings at home.
