TOLEDO, OH – Toledo downed Duquesne, 6-1, on Friday afternoon at Shadow Valley Maumee. With the win, the Rockets improve to 2-3 on the season.
"We played extremely well together in all the doubles matches," said head coach Al Wermer. "I was impressed to see that we carried that momentum into singles and got off to a great start right off the bat."
The Rockets had an extremely strong showing in their doubles matches vs. the Dukes. The sophomore duo of Vince Anzalone and Serjen Olmedo defeated their opponents, 6-3, at the No. 2 spot before sophomores Juan Carranza and Reid Teatsorth sailed to a 6-1 victory at No. 3. Senior Stjepan Sisko and freshman Thawin Suksathaporn were en route to a win before their match was cut short at 5-2.
Toledo continued its momentum into the singles competition and recorded four two-set victories. Sisko, Anzalone, Teatsorth and Suksathaporn all claimed their second-straight singles win.
Sophomore Luka Vitosevic downed his opponent, 6-3, in the opening set at third singles, but Duquesne's Tim Kane responded with a 7-6 victory of his own. Vitosevic bested Kane, 10-8, to solidify UT's 6-1 win.
The Rockets travel to Milwaukee, WI next weekend to battle Marquette on Friday, Feb. 3 at 6:00 p.m. before matching up against Green Bay on Sunday, Feb. 5 at Noon.
