TOLEDO, OH - Toledo (12-3, 3-1 MAC) begins a pivotal portion of its Mid-American Conference slate when it hosts West Division co-leader Northern Illinois (11-4, 4-0 MAC) on Saturday, Jan. 14. Tip-off time is set for 2:00 p.m. in Savage Arena and will be streamed live on ESPN3.
In conjunction with tomorrow's MAC West Division match-up, fans can meet and have their photo taken with Cinderella and Belle on the main concourse during pre-game and halftime.
Four of UT's next five games will take place in the friendly confines of Savage Arena. The Midnight Blue & Gold has compiled a stout 106-30 (.779) ledger at home over the last eight-plus seasons, including a 57-14 (.803) mark against conference opponents.
Toledo, which is ranked No. 23 in this week's collegeinsider.com Mid-Major Top 25 Poll, enters tomorrow's MAC West Division showdown riding a three-game winning streak following Wednesday's 73-64 road triumph at reigning MAC Tournament champion Buffalo (11-4, 1-3 MAC).
Sophomore Mikaela Boyd paced the victorious Rockets with 19 points and a contest-best 10 caroms against the Bulls to post her second double-double in the last three games. Sophomore Kaayla McIntyre added 15 points, seven boards and a game-high two rejections, while freshman Sara Rokkanen chipped in a season-high nine points and junior Jada Woody and sophomore Sarah St-Fort tallied seven each to help UT stay within one game of MAC West Division co-frontrunners Central Michigan (12-4, 4-0 MAC) and NIU.
As a team, Toledo shot a respectable 48.1 percent (26-of-54) from the field and 64.3 percent (18-of-24) from the free throw line to hand UB its first home loss of the year.
The Rockets shot a high percentage from the floor due to their ability to consistently get the ball into the low blocks and shoot from point-blank range. As a result, they dominated on the interior and finished with a commanding 40-24 edge in points in the paint.
UT was also solid defensively and held UB to a 36.1 percent (22-of-61) shooting mark from the floor, including 20.0 percent (4-of-20) from three-point land. In addition, the Rockets forced 19 turnovers and translated those miscues into 16 points.
Toledo, which is 6-2 at home, is fueled offensively by the quintet of junior Jay-Ann Bravo-Harriott, Boyd, senior Janice Monakana, McIntyre and freshman Mariella Santucci, who are averaging 12.4, 11.4, 9.9, 9.0 and 8.7 ppg, respectively. Monakana has missed the last three games with a shin injury and is listed as questionable for today's contest.
The Rockets will be greatly challenged on Saturday, as the Huskies are in the midst of a season-best five-game winning streak. Most recently, NIU secured a 98-97 road victory at Kent St. on Wednesday. Janae Poisson paced five Huskies in double figures with 27 points off the bench, while MAC Player of the Year candidate Ally Lehman had 15 points, a game-high nine caroms and a contest-best eight assists while playing all 40 minutes.
NIU, which is 5-4 away from home, is paced by Cassidy Glenn's 17.5 ppg, followed closely by Courtney Wood's and Lehman's 17.4 and 16.8 ppg, respectively. In addition, Lehman is leading the league in assist/turnover ratio (3.1, 106-34) and defensive boards (7.2 rpg), as well as ranking second in overall rebounding (10.7 rpg) and helpers (7.1 apg).
As a team, Northern Illinois is tops in the MAC in scoring offense (91.1 ppg), overall field-goal percentage (.453, 491-of-1,085), three-point field-goal percentage (.385, 126-of-327), free throw percentage (.814, 259-of-318) and assist/turnover ratio (1.2, 245-205).
