LOUISVILLE, KY – The Toledo men's and women's cross country teams will participate in the Greater Louisville Classic on Saturday, Oct. 1. The men's race will begin at 10:45 a.m., while the women will run at either 10:15 or 11:30 a.m. at Tom Sawyer State Park.
Both teams return to action after having a week off from competition, as they last ran at the Mel Brodt Invitational against arch-rival Bowling Green on Sept. 16. It was a successful and improved outing for both programs and they look to build upon their early-season success.
On the men's side, junior Alberto Chelimo has recorded two first-place finishes in as many races. Junior Titus Koech has also produced consecutive Top 5 finishes, while fellow junior Stalline Kurgat finished third in the most recent meet and sixth in the season opener.
Sophomores Caleb Morehart and Matthew Gibbons are evidence of the successful training the team has undergone so far this season by running personal best times at the Mel Brodt event. Morehart finished 14th with a time of 27:00.5, while Gibbons placed 29th with a time of 29:40.4, more than 10 seconds better than their previous bests, respectively.
The women's team has also started the season strong. In its first meet at home in the Toledo Opener, UT was able to place seven runners within the Top 10. In the Mel Brodt Invitational the following week, they placed 10 runners within the Top 15.
The team has had a nice mix of new and returning talent that is leading the team through the first two meets.
In the first race, it was freshman Athena Welsh who finished first overall, while junior Joan Jepkirui placed first on the team in the second meet. Sophomores Jennifer Lichter and Olivia Chinn, along with junior Caroline Lambert and senior Theresa Warsecke, have finished among the top tier of runners at each race.
Following this meet, both teams will compete in the adidas Pre-National Invitational on Saturday, Oct. 15 in Terre Haute, IN.
