DADE CITY, FL – Toledo will begin its spring campaign on Monday-Tuesday, Feb. 8-9 when it participates in the fifth-annual Earl Yestingsmeier Match Play event. The tournament will take place at the Lake Jovita Golf Course (Par 72, 7,153 Yards) and be hosted by Ball State University.
The two-day event consists of 54 holes of match-play competition. Teams are seeded one through eight based upon Golfstat rankings and then placed into a bracket. All teams are guaranteed three matches with losing squads from the first and second rounds continuing to compete in a consolation bracket. Each team match will consist of six individual matches. Lineup order for each squad is based upon individual player Golfweek rankings, with the top-rated player in the No. 1 position and so on.
The first round will begin on Monday at 8:30 a.m. with a shotgun start, followed by continuous play for the second round. The third and final round will be played on Tuesday with an 8:30 a.m. shotgun start as well.
There will be a total of eight teams participating in the season-opening tournament, with No. 1 seed Miami (Golfstat Ranking No. 97), No. 2 Notre Dame (120), No. 4 Xavier (137), No. 5 Eastern Michigan (142), No. 6 Dayton (154), No. 7 Ball State (162) and No. 8 Ohio (171), joining the No. 3 seed and defending co-champion Rockets (121).
Toledo will face the No. 6 seed Flyers in the first round with the other pairings pitting MU vs. Ohio, UND vs. BSU and XU vs. EMU. Live scoring and tournament results will be available at http://bit.ly/1JYc0wi on Golfstat.
The Rockets' lineup will consist of senior Otto Black at No. 1, sophomore Stephen Watts at No. 2, freshman Spencer Shoemaker at No. 3, sophomore Colin Joseph at No. 4, senior Thomas Shindler at No. 5 and freshman Cameron Mills at No. 6.
A year ago, the Rockets defeated Miami and Dayton at the rain-shortened event and were declared co-champions along with Eastern Michigan. The trio of Chris Selfridge, Mike Lancaster and Watts each won both of their matches to help the Midnight Blue & Gold claim a share of the championship.
The Lake Jovita South Course, designed by Tom Lehman and golf course architect Kurt Sandness, brings with it unique challenges and golf conditions. Taking advantage of the hilly terrain to create a course with professional tour quality, the Par 5-11th hole features a 94-foot drop from tee to green - the largest natural elevation change of any course in the state of Florida.
Formerly known as the Mid-American Match Play, the event was renamed this year in honor of Earl Yestingsmeier, who passed away in January 2014 at age 80. Yestingsmeier spent 36 seasons leading the Ball State men's golf program, including 31 in a dual role as sports information director and golf coach.
Following next week's season-opening event, UT will participate in the Colleton River Collegiate on Monday-Tuesday, March 7-8 in Bluffton, SC.
Previous Champions: Eastern Michigan & TOLEDO (2015)*, Ball State (2014), Bowling Green (2013), Ball State (2012)
