TOLEDO, OH – Toledo men's tennis will kick off its winter schedule this weekend when it travels to West Lafayette, IN on Saturday, Jan. 16 for a match against Purdue at 6:00 p.m. The Rockets will remain on the road to face Michigan State on Sunday, Jan 18 at 11:00 a.m. in East Lansing, MI.
"I don't think any coach knows exactly what to expect in the first weekend after five weeks with no structured training and little contact," said head coach Al Wermer. "What I do know is that our first week back has been very productive and the guys have a good mindset. I think they realize what amazing opportunities our challenging non-conference schedule gives us."
FALL RECAP
The Rockets finished their 2015 fall slate with a 51-44 overall record in singles play and a 22-24 mark in doubles. The team finished with an 11-4 singles record at the Rocket Invitational (Oct. 9-11) and a 13-8 in singles at the Crusader Invitational (Oct. 16-18).
"The fall was definitely a little tumultuous, but that is to be expected with six freshmen," Wermer said. "However, everyone was extremely competitive. This team has a desire to learn and absorb everything they can."
WINTER & SPRING PREVIEW
The highlights, aside from the spring conference matches, will be the non-conference dual matches against Purdue, Ohio State, Michigan State and Michigan.
"We start with a handful of high-octane teams right out of the gate," Wermer said. "Our guys will need to have productive holiday breaks."
Toledo will begin its challenging winter schedule with three road matches against Big 10 teams Purdue (Jan. 16), Michigan State (Jan. 18) and No. 10 Ohio State (Jan. 24).
The Rockets then have a string of seven home matches from Jan. 30 through Feb. 19, including a match-up against 2015 Horizon League champion Green Bay. UT will hit the road for matches against Dayton and Wright State on Feb. 21, before returning home for the final three contests of the winter season.
Toledo will open its spring season with a match on the road against Big 10 Conference member Michigan on March 12 and a home contest versus Marquette on March 13.
Mid-American Conference play begins with a pair of matches in Muncie, IN on March 18-19 against Ball State and Northern Illinois.
"The MAC has added a pod plan," Wermer said. "It now gives us seven conference dual-matches for our spring season which is important. Every single match and point is so hard to predict because our conference is so evenly matched."
The Rockets will host two conference matches this season, the first against Binghamton on March 27 and the last to wrap up the regular season against Western Michigan on April 23. The 2016 conference championships will be hosted by Northern Illinois in DeKalb on April 29-30.
"I think our journey through the mix of tough non-conference teams will be perfect in preparing our young guys for the MAC season and MAC tourney," said Wermer.
