Toledo Secures League-Tying Best 10 Players on 2015 Academic All-MAC Team

CLEVELAND, OH – A league-tying best 10 members of the Toledo baseball team were selected Academic All-Mid-American Conference, the league announced on Friday. The Rockets tied Eastern Michigan for the most academic recipients. Senior RHP Andrew Marra (LaSalle, ONT), senior INF Nate Langhals (Strongsville, OH), senior RHP Alec Schmenk (Perrysburg, OH), junior LHP Ross Achter (Oregon, OH), junior OF/INF John Martillotta (Chardon, OH), junior RHP Caleb Schillace (LaGrange, OH), junior C Lucas Sokol (Akron, OH), junior SS Deion Tansel (Grand Rapids, OH), sophomore LHP Steven Calhoun (Tipp City, OH) and sophomore OF Jordan Kesson (Hartland, MI) were chosen to represent UT on the 77-player list honoring the student-athletes' achievements both on the field as well as in the classroom.
Marra becomes only the fifth player in school history to garner academic all-league recognition on three occasions, joining Rich Molnar (1981, '82, '83), Joe Corfman (2010, '11, '12), Ben Hammer (2011, '12, '13) and most recently James Miglin (2012, '13, '14). Martillotta is a two-time selection, while Achter, Calhoun, Kesson, Langhals, Schillace, Schmenk, Sokol and Tansel are first-time recipients. Â
To qualify for Academic All-MAC honors, a student-athlete must have at least a 3.20 cumulative GPA and have participated in at least 50 percent of the contests for that particular sport.
A nursing major with a perfect 4.0 GPA, Marra possessed a 2-1 ledger with 18 punchouts and a 2.78 ERA in 32.1 innings out of the bullpen in 2015. He finished tied for second on the team in total appearances (22) and tied for fifth in wins. Marra wrapped up his collegiate career fifth in UT annals with eight saves.
A mechanical engineering major with a 3.98 GPA, Martillotta tied for the league lead with 10 doubles in conference contests in 2015 and tied for fifth with 15 overall two-baggers (second on team).

One of two Rockets to start every contest this spring (40 in center field, 15 at third base, three at shortstop), Martillotta hit .281 (61-for-217) with a squad-tying best 36 runs scored, two home runs, 26 RBI and six stolen bases. He hit safely in 43 games, including 14 multi-hit and five multi-RBI efforts. The Chardon, OH native tied for first on the squad in runs scored, second in total bases (82), hits, hit by pitches (12) and two-base hits, tied for second in multi-RBI efforts, third in on-base percentage (.350), RBI, thefts and sacrifice bunts (6), fourth in batting average, slugging percentage (.378) and multi-hit games and tied for fourth in home runs and walks (12). In the classroom, Martillotta has been a member of UT's Dean's List the last six semesters, including a perfect 4.0 GPA on five occasions.
A business major with a concentration in supply chain management and a 3.42 GPA, Langhals batted .226 (33-for-146) with 14 runs scored, four doubles and 14 RBI in 48 contests (36 at third base, 12 at first base) in 2015. He hit safely in 22 games, including 10 multi-hit and two multi-RBI efforts. The fourth-year letterwinner finished third on the team in free passes (15) and hit by pitches (11) and fifth in on-base percentage (.339). In the classroom, Langhals has been a member of UT's Dean's List in three of the last eight semesters.
A construction engineering technology major with a 3.65 GPA, Schmenk sported a 2-2 record with 24 strikeouts, a 5.24 ERA and one save in 44.2 frames this spring. He tied for second on the squad in total appearances (22) and ranked fifth in strikeouts and games started (5) and tied for fifth in victories. In the classroom, Schmenk has been a member of UT's Dean's List in six of the last eight semesters, including a perfect 4.0 GPA in Fall 2013.
A new visual arts major with a 3.31 GPA, Achter appeared in a team-high 24 games out of the bullpen in 2015. He posted a 0-1 record with 28 strikeouts and a 2.39 ERA in 37.2 innings of work. The southpaw hurler finished first on the team in total appearances and fourth in punchouts. In the classroom, Achter was a member of UT's Dean's List in Fall 2014 semester.
A recreation therapy major with a 3.56 ERA, Schillace ranked sixth in the MAC and first on the team with a miniscule 2.66 ERA in 2015. He also possessed the best control on the squad and allowed just 23 walks in 74.1 innings of work. The 2015 second-team All-MAC honoree according to College Sports Madness appeared in the starting weekend rotation on 12 occasions this spring and logged at least 7.0 frames five times.
Schillace finished first on the squad in ERA, third in opponent batting average (.277), innings pitched, strikeouts and games started and tied for third in wins. In the classroom, Schillace has been a member of UT's Dean's List in five of the last six semesters.
A pharmacy administration major with a 3.42 GPA, Sokol took over the Rockets' starting duties behind the plate at the start of the 2015 conference campaign. He hit .220 (18-of-82) in league play, compared to a .185 overall mark (24-for-130).

Overall this spring, Sokol started 42 contests and hit safely on 20 occasions, including four multi-hit efforts. He tied for third on the team in runs scored (23), tied for fourth in hit by pitches (4) and fifth in sacrifice flies (4). In the classroom, Sokol has been a member of UT's Dean's List in three of the last eight semesters, including a perfect 4.0 GPA in Spring 2015.
A multi-age education major with a 3.21 GPA, Tansel led the Rockets in batting average (.324), on-base percentage (.413), hit by pitches (14) and stolen bases (12) in 2015, en route to earning first-team All-MAC accolades. Tansel finished 10th in the league in batting average and on-base percentage. The Grand Rapids, OH native hit safely in 32 of 43 contests, posting 15 multi-hit and five multi-RBI efforts. Tansel performed even better in MAC games with a squad-best .346 batting average (10th in MAC) and .452 on-base percentage (fifth in MAC). In the field, the 2015 MAC Defensive Player of the Year totaled 138 assists and 82 putouts, while committing only seven errors for a .969 fielding percentage. In the classroom, Tansel was a member of UT's Dean's List in Fall 2012 semester.
A business major with a 3.73 GPA, Calhoun was tied for first in the MAC in league games with six victories and third with a sparkling 1.61 ERA in 56.0 innings of work in 2015.
In overall contests, the 2015 first-team All-MAC pitcher tied for third with seven victories, tied for fifth with 15 games started, sixth with 88.0 innings pitched and tied for 10th with 66 strikeouts. Calhoun logged at least 7.0 frames in four starts.

A criminal justice major with a 3.65 GPA, Kesson started 22 of 28 games (10 in left field, nine at designated hitter, three in right field), hitting .266 (21-for-79) with five runs scored, four doubles, a squad-tying best two triples, one home run and eight RBI. He hit safely in 15 games, including five multi-hit and two multi-RBI efforts. Kesson also saw action in three games at pitcher in a relief role and accumulated 2.1 innings of work. In the classroom, Kesson has been a member of UT's Dean's List in three of the last four semesters.
Overall in 2015, Toledo tallied a 25-33 overall mark and a 16-11 ledger in the MAC. The Rockets finished second in the MAC West Division and advanced to the league tournament for the seventh time under head coach Cory Mee and 10th time overall. UT has now finished in the top two in the MAC West Division in four of the last seven years under Coach Mee. Â
