It took 15 innings but the Rockets came out on top against the Bobcats in Athens, on Sunday.
Deadlocked at 3-3 following an OU homer in the bottom of the eighth, Toledo's stout perseverance paid off in the top of the 15th as the Bobcats made a pair of costly mistakes. UT senior Nate Langhals was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded and junior John Martillotta trotted home to give Toledo a 4-3 lead.
Junior Lucas Sokol then sent a routine grounder to third baseman John Adryan, who elected to get the out at second base and attempt to turn a double play. However, OU second baseman Garrett Black's throw to first was wild and that allowed junior Ryan Callahan and freshman Dalton Bollinger to score and give Toledo a 6-3 lead.
Ohio did cut the lead was cut to just two runs in the bottom half of the inning as Tyler Wells launched a solo homer but the Rockets bullpen was able to get out of Athens with the victory.
Senior Alec Schmenk earned his second victory of the season with a scoreless inning of relief for starter Caleb Schillace. Schillace was solid on the mound for the UT, as the LaGrange, OH native gave up just two earned runs on six hits in 6.2 innings of work.
Pacing the Rockets at the plate were Martillotta and Bollinger who each recorded three hits and an RBI. Langhals, Callahan and freshman A.J. Montoya also registered multi-hits in the game for Toledo.
The Rockets will return to action on Friday, May 7 as they welcome Miami (OH) to Scott Park for a three-game series. First pitch on Friday is slated for 3:05 p.m.Â
