
Toledo Sweeps Mid-Week Doubleheader At IPFW

The Rockets took game one 8-0, then topped the Mastodons 7-2 in game two.
FORT WAYNE, IN – The Toledo softball team finished its non-conference schedule off on a high note, sweeping IPFW in a doubleheader on Wednesday afternoon in Fort Wayne.
The Rockets took game one 8-0 in five innings, and then won 7-2 in game two, to improve to 22-30 on the season.
In game one, the Rockets jumped out to an early lead with two runs in the top of the first inning. Junior OF Jessica Lemieux scored on an error, and freshman IF Samantha Showalter lined a single through the left side, scoring sophomore OF Celeste Fidge.
In the second inning, Toledo added two more runs on a two RBI single to right field by sophomore IF Chandler Rice. Freshman OF Alyssa Smith and freshman OF Ashley Rausch scored on the play.
Four more runs in the top of the fourth gave UT an 8-0 lead, as Smith recorded two RBI on a single, and Lemieux tallied a two-run double later in the inning.
Smith, Rice and Lemieux, the Rockets' top three batters in the lineup, each went 2-for-3 in the game with two RBI apiece.
Sophomore P Emily Anderson took home the victory, pitching 5.0 innings and allowing just one hit with four strikeouts.
In game two, IPFW took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning before the Rockets tied it up in the third as sophomore C Ashley Maynard scored on a wild pitch.
The Midnight Blue & Gold took a 2-1 lead in the top of the fifth, as senior OF Mareshah Scott scored on an error, but the Mastodons tied the game back up the following inning.
The UT offense exploded for five runs in the top of the seventh inning, with the Rockets recording five hits in the frame. Lemieux had her second two-RBI hit of the day, this time on a single up the middle. Rice, Fidge and graduate transfer SS Nichole Toven each tallied RBI hits in the inning as well to put the game away.
Fidge went 2-for-4 in the game with an RBI, while Toven finished with a 3-for-4 game and two doubles. Maynard rounded out the Rockets with multi-hit games, going 2-for-3 in the contest.
Junior P Marla Gooding recorded the win in game two, pitching 2.0 innings and allowing one earned run on one hit. Senior P Alli Beery started the game and went 5.0 innings and allowed one run on four hits with two strikeouts.
The Rockets conclude their regular season with four crucial Mid-American Conference road games this weekend. UT will take on Central Michigan in a doubleheader on Friday, May 1 beginning at 1:00 p.m., then will face Eastern Michigan for games on Saturday-Sunday, May 2-3.
