ANN ARBOR, MI – Toledo suffered a 7-0 loss at Big Ten member Michigan on Wednesday under the lights at Ray Fisher Stadium. With the setback, the Rockets fall to 19-27 overall.
UT was limited to a season-tying low four hits against a quartet of Wolverine (25-22) pitchers to sustain its fifth shutout of the spring. The Midnight Blue & Gold also finished with four hits against Miami on Sunday, March 31. Toledo came into tonight's game having collected at least 10 hits in six of the previous seven contests.
Junior CF Tyler Grogg (1-for-4), junior LF Jacob North (1-for-1, 2 BB), junior 2B Zack Michael (1-for-2) and freshman SS Deion Tansel (1-for-4) were credited with the hits versus the Wolverines.
The 2012 Mid-American Conference West Division champions were restricted to singles in the third, sixth, seventh and eighth innings to snap their two-game series win streak.
Senior RHP Jared Locke (2-5) was strapped with the loss, giving up four runs (all earned) on one hit with four walks in 2.0 frames.
Toledo did though receive solid relief pitching over the final 5.0 innings, yielding no runs on six hits to keep the contest fairly close throughout. The group of redshirt freshman RHP Austin Schmidt, freshman RHP Caleb Schillace, freshman RHP Kyle Slack and sophomore RHP Andrew Marra each toed the rubber in the late frames and did a nice job keeping the Michigan bats quiet.
U of M jumped all over Locke and the Rockets with four runs in its first at-bat. The home team sent eight batters to the plate and received RBI from DH Jacob Cronenworth (1-for-4, RS, RBI) and RF Kevin White (2-for-3, RS, 4 RBI) to assume a lead they would not surrender.
The Wolverines padded their advantage with a three-run blast off the bat of White in the third inning to make the final tally 7-0.
Michigan CF Michael O'Neill (2-for-5, RS), SS Travis Maezes (2-for-4, RS) and White each finished with a game-high two hits.
Kyle Clark (1-0) earned his first win of the spring, allowing one hit in 2.0 innings of relief.
Toledo will look to return to its winning ways this weekend, May 10-12, when it travels to Ball State for an important three-game series at the Ball Diamond. Friday's first pitch is slated for 3:00 p.m., while Saturday's and Sunday's games will start at 1:00 p.m.
