KALAMAZOO, Mich. - The Toledo men's tennis team fell in a road conference tilt to Western Michigan on Friday afternoon in Kalamazoo, Mich. The Rockets drop to 18-10 overall, 0-4 in league play, and will play the regular season finale at Chicago State Saturday afternoon. The orginally scheduled 1:00 p.m. match has been pushed back to 2:30 p.m. CT and will be played indoors.
"In doubles, we had a match point, then obviously there were a lot of tight situations in singles," UT head coach Al Wermer said. "Although this was our best MAC match in terms of finishing, we just haven't stayed loose in key moments - unlike during our excellent non-conference season."
Senior Francisco Stuardo improved to 3-1 in league play when he moved past Western Michigan's Ross VanderPloeg in a close bout, 7-5, 2-6, 1-0(10-8).
Fellow senior notched the other UT point at No. 5 singles in comeback fashion. Weigand dropped the opening set 2-6, but rebounded for 7-5, 6-1 wins to seal the point.
Sophomore Nicky Wong was unable to hold on after capturing the opening set in the fourth slot, while sophomore Tomas Stillman went down in the top flight.
UT played tough in doubles as the point decision came down to No. 3, but WMU's duo escaped with a tie-breaker, 9-8 (9-7).
