PITTSBURGH, PA - Toledo came up on the short end of a 4-2 decision to host Pitt on Friday afternoon in its second game of the Panther Classic. The victory dropped the Rockets' record to 6-10, while Pittsburgh improved to 11-5 on the season.
Junior Ethan Mildren hurled a complete game for the hosts, allowing six hits and two runs while fanning two batters. Senior LHP Kyle Shaw (1-3) was the hard-luck loser for UT after surrendering just four hits and three runs in six innings.
Freshman 2B Deion Tansel paced the Rockets offensively with a season-high three hits in three at-bats.
The Panthers struck first by scoring a pair of runs in the second. Sophomore C Elvin Soto led off a walk and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt. Freshman DH AJ Lardo reached on an infield single and redshirt freshman 2B Dylan Wolsonovic plated two runs with a double to the gap in left-center.
Soto tripled right-center to lead off the bottom of the fourth and was brought home on a fielder's choice to extend the Panther lead to 3-0.
Toledo threatened in the top of the sixth when freshman 2B Deion Tansel reached second with one out, but Mildren was able to work through the jam getting senior DH Matt Delewski to fly out to left and fanning senior CF Ben Hammer.
After Pitt added another insurance run in the seventh, Toledo was able to get on the board with a pair of runs in the eighth after loading the bases with one out. Sophomore SS Nate Langhals came across on a wild pitch, and Tansel scored on Delewski's grounder to second.
Mildren was able to shut the door in the ninth inning though by retiring UT in order.
The Rockets return to action on Saturday, March 16 with two more games at the Panther Classic. UT will face Niagara (3-15) at 10:15 a.m. before looking to avenge its loss to the Panthers at 4:15 p.m.
