Rockets to Host Inverness Intercollegiate Next Week

TOLEDO, OH - The University of Toledo men's golf program will host the Inverness Intercollegiate next week with a 10-team field, including four Big Ten schools, coming to the Glass City. The tournament is scheduled to be played at the renowned par-71, 7,255-yard Inverness Club on Monday-Tuesday, Sept. 17-18.
"Inverness is a tremendous golf course and we're extremely fortunate to host a tournament at a course with so much history," Toledo Head Coach Jamie Broce said. "We're going to be facing some stiff competition playing on a difficult course. It's going to be a good indicator to see where we stand and what we need to work on."
UT opened its 2012-13 campaign earlier this week by tying for fifth place at the Marshall Invitational. Reigning Mid-American Conference Freshman of the Year Chris Selfridge led the Rockets with a 12th-place tie and an even-par 213 (68-71-74). Providing the Rockets depth behind Selfridge were freshman Otto Black (215/18th), junior Oliver Holtsberry (219/T-35th), sophomore Mike Lancaster (221/T-44th) and sophomore Pat Cermak (227/T-67th). Toledo shot an even-par 284 in its final round to tie for the best score of the day with Selfridge's three-over par 74 not factoring into the Rockets' score.
"It was very encouraging to tie for low score in the final round and not count the score of our No. 1 player," Broce said. "We had a great team effort, and everyone was really into about how we were doing as a team."
Headlining this year's field will be five teams - No. 16 Florida State, No. 17 Kent State, No. 21 Liberty, No. 28 North Texas and No. 49 Northwestern - that were ranked in the Top 50 of the final 2011-12 Golfstat rankings. The Golden Flashes reached the 'Elite Eight' of the 2012 NCAA Championships, while the Seminoles and Flames finished tied for eighth and 10th, respectively, at the championships. Also making up the field will be Michigan, Michigan State, Penn State and South Florida.
Four of the eight champions of the Inverness Intercollegiate have come from the Southeastern Conference (SEC) with Florida (2002, 2005), South Carolina (2000) and Kentucky (2004) taking home titles. Florida State (2007), Kent State (2011), USC (2006), UCLA (2003) are the only non-SEC teams to win the title.
The event was limited to just one round last year due to inclement weather with the Rockets posting their highest finish in tournament history with a third-place showing. Former Rocket Dugan Murphy captured medalist honors by firing a five-under par 66 for the best finish ever by a UT golfer.
The Inverness Club was founded in 1903 and along with the University of Toledo served as host for the 2009 NCAA Men's Golf Championships. Inverness has also hosted four U.S. Opens, two U.S. Senior Opens, two PGA Championships and one U.S. Amateur.
