Rockets Escape with a Pair of 4-3 Wins

Toledo, OH - The Toledo men's tennis team was able to pull out two home victories on Saturday, Feb. 25, posting a pair of 4-3 wins over IUPUI and Youngstown State. UT won all six doubles matches over the course of the two contests, which was the deciding factor as it split singles matches with both opponents.

The Rockets (10-6, 0-0 MAC) continued improved their home unbeaten streak to 10 matches.

Against IUPUI, the No. 1 doubles team of Leo Sarria and Tomas Stillman defeated O'Neill/Bielawski, 8-4. In second-doubles, Terence Weigand and Nick Wong topped Volz/Modesitt, 8-3. Grant Adams and Garrett Cona picked up an 8-1 victory in No. 3 doubles over Shafer/Choudhary.

Stillman, Adams and Sarria scored wins in Nos. 1, 2 and 4, respectively. Stillman defeated Volz, 6-4, 6-2. Adams topped Bielawski, 6-4, 6-0. Sarria beat Shafer, 5-7, 6-1, 6-4.

In the second match of the day, against Youngstown State, all three doubles teams won again. Sarria/Stillman defeated T. Ismail/Kabli, 8-5; Weigand/Wong beat Z. Ismail/Mistreann, 8-6 and Adams/Cona defeated Schmerin/Campos, 8-2.

The Rockets picked up wins in first-, third- and sixth-singles matches. Stillman won No. 1 singles in three sets over T. Ismail, 6-2, 6-7(5), 7-6(3). Weigand also earned a three-set victory in the No. 3 spot, beating Schmerin, 5-7, 6-2, 6-2. Dimofte made his debut of the dual-match season, defeating Campos in sixth-singles, 7-6(6). 6-4.

"Our doubles looked much better today, as we won on each court today," said head coach Al Wermer. In singles, we won enough to get by today, but we looked spotty. The guys fought pretty hard in the first match, but the second match was lackluster. However, we did enough to pick up the wins."
