TOLEDO, OH - The University of Toledo men's golf program will host the Inverness Intercollegiate with an 11-team field, including four Big Ten schools, coming to the Glass City on Monday-Tuesday, Sept. 26-27. The tournament is scheduled to be played at the renowned par-71, 7,255-yard Inverness Club and will be the first time the Rockets have hosted a tournament since the Ping Preview was played in the 2008-09 campaign.
"Hosting our Inverness tournament is always exciting, because we get to compete against top competition in our own backyard," Toledo Head Coach Jamie Mauntler said. "We're going to have a young team this season, and this year's tournament will be a good gauge for us to see where we stand."
Senior Mike Cermak is Toledo's top returnee with a 74.6 stroke average. The Rockets are adding a talented recruiting class that includes Pat Cermak (Chicago, IL), Mike Lancaster (Hamilton, ONT), Jamie Richardson (Ballyclare, Northern Ireland) and Chris Selfridge (Belfast, Northern Ireland).
Headlining the field will be five teams - No. 6 Florida, No. 23 Ohio State, No. 32 Kent State, No. 33 Liberty and No. 34 Michigan - that were ranked in the Top 35 of the final 2010-11 Golfweek NCAA rankings. The Buckeyes reached the Elite Eight of the 2011 NCAA Championships, while the Wolverines tied for 10th place at the championships. Also making up the field will be East Tennessee State, Kentucky, Michigan State, Penn State and South Alabama.
ETSU's incoming freshman Rhys Pugh (Pontypridd, Wales) may be the top individual in the field and will be competing for Great Britain and Ireland squad at this year's Walker Cup at Royal Aberdeen on September 10 and 11.
Four of the seven champions of the Inverness Intercollegiate have come from the Southeastern Conference (SEC) with Florida (2002, 2005), South Carolina (2000) and Kentucky (2004) taking home titles. Florida State (2007), Southern Cal (2006) and UCLA (2003) are the only non-SEC teams to win the title. The Rockets' highest team finish in the event was a fifth-place showing in 2002 with former All-American Brad Heaven posting UT's best individual showing with a runner-up finish in 2003.
The Inverness Club was founded in 1903 and along with the University of Toledo served as host for the 2009 NCAA Men's Golf Championships. Inverness has also hosted four U.S. Opens, two U.S. Senior Opens, two PGA Championships and one U.S. Amateur.
