MILWAUKEE, WI - Toledo (5-5) put up a strong fight against Big East foe Marquette (5-4) on Sunday afternoon but ended up on the short end of a 3-1 (25-16, 23-25, 25-23, 25-17) decision to the Golden Eagles at the Al McGuire Center.
"I thought we played our best match of the weekend today but we just couldn't match up against Marquette's size," said Toledo Head Coach Greg Smith after his team registered a .201 ATK% for its best hitting mark of the weekend. "We played with a lot more energy and fight, and that's what we need to do on a consistent basis."
Junior OH Amber DeWeerdt paced the Rockets' offense with 15 kills to go along with a .289 attack percentage, while sophomore MB Bethany Irwin registered 11 terminations and a team-best .400 hitting clip.
Senior libero Katie Westerfeld led UT's defensive efforts with 17 digs with freshman OH Jordan Kielty tallying 15 digs.
Ashley Beyer topped Marquette offensively with a match-high 19 kills, and Rachel Stier contributed a match-best 20 digs.
With the match tied at one-set apiece, the Rockets had an opportunity to take a 2-1 advantage. A DeWeerdt kill and a Marquette ballhandling error tied the set at 20-20, but the Golden Eagles wouldn't let UT gain the lead the rest of the way.
Toledo will be back in action on Friday, Sept. 17 when it returns home to Savage Arena to host Michigan State (6-3). The starting time for the match is set for 7:00 p.m.
