EAST LANSING, MI ? Toledo's women's tennis team headed north for its second tournament of the 2008-09 season and junior Maha Guirguis returned to the Buckeye State with an unblemished singles record. Guirguis went 3-0 over the weekend at the Spartan Invitational hosted by Michigan State on Saturday and Sunday.
"We looked really good in spots this weekend but as a team we have a lot to work on," said Head Coach Tracy Mauntler. "I am looking forward to having almost two full weeks of practice before our next tournament at WMU. Maha and Ashley won some impressive singles matches this weekend and really showed what great competitors they are."
On Saturday, Guirguis defeated Lindsey Lonergan of Michigan State, 6-3, 4-6 (14) for her first match and win of the invitational. She then went on to nab wins over Mid-American Conference competitors Tanya Gombera (Akron) and Katia Babina (Bowling Green) on Saturday and Sunday, respectively.
Guirguis also paired up with Martina Wodzinski for doubles play. The duo's first match ended in favor of the Rockets as Girguis and Wodzinski defeated Annie Moore and Zeljka Minic of Detroit Mercy, 8-2. UT played two additional doubles matches the next day with the Rockets splitting the matches and Guirguis and Wodzinski picking up an 8-5 win over Charlotte Gibbons and Catrine Bjerrehus of Cleveland State.
Ashley Frey and Nadia Zoubareva went 2-1 in doubles play as UT's No. 2 duo as they were victorious over Kelly Davis and Svetlana Flankova of Detroit Mercy (8-4) and Sanda Bjelan and Jackie Tabb of Cleveland State (8-3). Frey also went 2-1 in singles play with two three-set wins over MAC opponents.
Also nabbing singles wins for UT were Zoubareva with a victory over Akron's Carolina Castro (6-4, 6-1) and Jessica Azoulay with a win over Akron's Kerry Langworthy (6-2, 5-1, 6-0).
The Rockets will be in action next at the MAC Individual Tournament in Kalamazoo, MI from Oct. 10-12.
