TOLEDO, OH - Toledo salvaged a split in its doubleheader against Heidelberg with a 5-3 victory in the nightcap at Scott Park. The Rockets (19-22) dropped a 2-1 decision to the Student Princes (25-13) in today's opening contest.
The Rockets pounded out seven hits against four different HC pitchers, with senior Ryan Laude, junior Drew Hoisington and freshman Tim Krofcheck leading the way with two hits apiece.
Sophomore Jeff Cinadr (3-1), the second of four UT pitchers who saw action, was credited with the victory, throwing one inning of relief. Senior Joe Roberts tossed the ninth to preserve the win and picked up his team-best sixth save of the season.
For the second-consecutive contest, the Rockets opened the scoring in its first at-bat. Hoisington led off with a double and advanced to third on a wild pitch, before senior Joel Visser plated the Cuyahoga Falls, OH native with a sacrifice fly.
UT struck again an inning later on a RBI single off the bat of Krofcheck to make the score 2-0.
Facing a two-run deficit, Heidelberg countered with a run in the third and two more tallies in the fourth to establish a 3-2 lead. In the fourth inning, the Student Princes took advantage of a UT fielding error, passed ball and a hit-by-pitch to take their first lead.
The Rockets, though, recovered in the fifth and tied the score at 3-3 on a RBI single by Laude. Two innings later, the Midnight Blue and Gold seized control of the game with a pair of runs on only one hit and the aid of two walks to help snap a four-game losing skid.
UT also received a good starting pitching performance from junior Mike Ellis, who went 6.0 innings and allowed three runs (one earned) on six hits with one strikeout but did not factor into the decision.
Heidelberg's Jeremy Wentworth led all batters with four hits and Steve Calevro (6-1) took the loss.
The Rockets return to action on Friday, May 4 to begin a three-game series against MAC West Division rival Ball State. Friday's first pitch from Scott Park is slated for 3:00 p.m., while Saturday's and Sunday's contest will start at 1:00 p.m.
