TOLEDO, OH - Toledo dropped a 23-11 decision to Xavier (25-27) in non-conference action at sunny Scott Park. With the setback, the Rockets fall to 24-25 for the season.
The Musketeers started off strong in the first inning, sending 14 batters to the plate and established a 9-0 lead. Xavier, which finished the game with five home runs, then scored two runs in the second, three in the third, fourth in the fourth, one each in the fifth, seventh and eighth and two more in the ninth for a total of 23.
Leftfielder Jordan Wolf led the Musketeers' attack by going 5-for-6 with two home runs, four runs scored and seven RBI. Eight of the XU starters scored a run, while seven collected a hit.
The Rockets' offense also put up some big numbers and scored seven runs in the second, three in the third and one in the fifth, but it just was not enough to keep up Xavier. For the game, the Midnight Blue and Gold outhit the Musketeers, 18-17, but left 10 runners stranded on base.
Junior Jake Swint (4-for-5, 3 RBI) led UT's offense, while seniors Joel Visser (2-for-6, HR, 4 RBI) and Ryan Laude (2-for-5, 2 RS), juniors Scott Boley (2-for-4) and Sean Boley (2-for-5, 2 RS), sophomore Jake Oester (2-for-5, RS, RBI) and freshman Ryan Satterlee (2-for-4, RS) also recorded multiple-hit efforts.
Freshman RHP Jacob Bernath (1-1), one of eight UT pitchers used, suffered the loss allowing six runs (four earned) on two hits in only one-third of an inning.
The Rockets will conclude their regular season vs. Northern Illinois on Thursday-Saturday, May 17-19 with a three-game series at home. The first pitch on Thursday is slated for 3:00 p.m.
