Toledo Inks Another Player for 2008 Campaign

Toledo, OH - Head softball coach Jo Ann Gordon announced today the signing of Whitney Young as an addition to the 2007-08 squad. Young is the fourth signee of the year for softball. UT also signed C/3B Kelly Hmiel (York, PA), UT Stephanie Peterson (Gahanna, OH), and OF/2B Sam Toy (El Dorado Hills, CA) during the early signing period last fall
The Granby, CO native will join the Rocket pitching staff next year. Pitching 126 innings her senior year, Young finished the season with a 16-5 record, pitching nine shutouts and totaling 233 strikeouts. On the offensive side, in her 67 at-bats she had 32 hits, 31 RBI, seven home runs and scored 33 runs. Her batting average was .478 with a .940 slugging percentage. In her career as a pitcher, Young has pitched 477 innings, finishing with a 41-17 record. She recorded 13 career shutouts and 515 strikeouts.
"Whitney will add some much needed depth to our pitching staff," said Gordon. "She is a fierce competitor on the mound and has the ability to hit for herself in the line-up."
At Middle Park High School, Young was a four-year letterwinner in softball and in Alpine Ski Racing. She was named to the All-State First Team for two years and was a three-time All-Conference First Team pitcher. Young was named "Best of the Best Pitcher" two years by a local newspaper and was also listed a one of the top five players to watch her senior year. She was also a four-year state qualifier in Alpine Ski Racing.
While in high school, she was a member of the National Honor Society and Student Council. She is also a member of SkillsUSA. Young will attend Toledo in the fall and plans to major in bioengineering.
