Toledo, OH - The University of Toledo men's tennis team defeated Northern Illinois 5-2 this afternoon at Laurel Hill Tennis Club. The Rockets are now 2-1 in the MAC and are 12-11 overall.
In doubles play, Toledo captured the point off of wins by Travis Curran and Brian Rager at No. 1 who won 8-5 and Mohammed Al Nabhani and Jared Miller at No.2 who won 9-7. The team of Keith Moran and Chris Clark fell short in their match at No. 3 losing 9-7 after having the 7-2 lead.
"Our theme for double today was `Reunited,'" said Head Coach Al Wermer. "We put Mo and Jared and Keith and Chris back together this afternoon and we had moderate success with that change."
Al Nabhani and Miller weren't as successful in singles as they were in doubles. Both lost their matches at No. 1 and No. 2 in three sets. Al Nabhani fell short in a tough match 5-7, 7-6 (5), 10-6 while Miller lost 3-6, 7-5, 10-8.
The rest of the singles line-up was successful though. At No. 3, Clark claimed a 6-3, 6-4 victory or his opponent and Josh Moran won at No. 4, 6-4, 6-1. Brother Keith Moran followed with a 6-3, 6-3 victory at No. 5 and Tyler Sonkin battled a tough conquest winning 6-4, 7-6 (10-8) at No. 6.
"Depth came into play for us today," said Wermer. "The focus was good and we played smart, especially at the end of the matches."
UT will take to the road this coming weekend where they will face Western Michigan. Match time is set for 3:30 PM or after the conclusion of the Rocket women's tennis match, also against the Broncos.
