TOLEDO, OH - Dayton scored eight runs in the final two innings and claimed an 11-7 victory over Toledo on Tuesday afternoon at Scott Park. The Flyers (13-18) tallied runs in each of the final five frames to overcome an early deficit and hand the Rockets (14-12) only their second home loss in eight contests this season.
UD finished with 12 hits against seven UT hurlers and was aided by 10 walks and three hit-batsmen. Mike Massa led the comeback for the visitors with three hits and three runs scored, while Scott Dunwoody, Myles Swartzel and Cole Tyrell each had two hits. Swartzel and Tyrell also combined for seven of Dayton's 11 RBI in the game.
Sophomore Jeff Cinadr, the sixth Toledo pitcher, was tagged with the loss. Cinadr allowed five runs (one earned) on five hits in 1.1 innings of relief duty.
Toledo started strong and opened the scoring with two runs in the bottom of the first inning on RBI's by senior Joel Visser and junior Scott Boley. The Flyers aided the Rockets' cause in the frame with a pair of errors.
UT added to its lead with single runs in the third and fourth innings to make the score 4-0. The tally in the third frame came as a result of the wild pitch with a runner on third base, while the other score came an inning later after a three-base throwing error by the UD infield.
Dayton finally got its offense rolling in the fifth on the strength of a RBI single off the bat of Dunwoody and a sacrifice fly off the bat of Massa in the sixth to cut the score in half and made it a 4-2 contest.
Needing to regain some momentum, Toledo pounded out two hits in the bottom of the sixth and tallied a run on the strength of a sacrifice fly by freshman Aaron Dudley to reestablish a three-run lead.
Unfortunately, UT's advantage did not last long and one run in the seventh, followed by five huge tallies in the eighth off Cinadr gave UD its first lead of the game, 8-5. The Flyers sent 10 batters to the plate in the eighth and recorded five hits. The big blow for UD was a two-run single by Tyrell.
The visitors were still not done scoring in the ninth and registerd a bases-clearing double by Myles Swartzel to push their lead to 11-5. Toledo did not give up hope in the bottom of the ninth, though, and fought to the bitter end on the strength of RBI's by juniors Drew Hoisington and Jake Swint, but it was too little too late for the Midnight Blue and Gold.
The Rockets return to action tomorrow when they travel to Ann Arbor, MI to battle Big Ten member Michigan. The first pitch from Ray Fisher Stadium is slated for 3:00 p.m.
