RUSTON, LA - Louisiana Tech (14-9) collected six extra-base hits, including three home runs, and registered an 11-5 victory over Toledo (4-3) this afternoon at J.C. Love Field.
The Bulldogs finished with 10 hits against five UT hurlers to claim the second contest in the brief two-game series.
Toledo opened the scoring in the first frame on a RBI triple to right field by senior Joel Visser, who finished with two hits.
Louisiana Tech quickly countered with two runs in the bottom of the first on the strength of a two-run blast by Brian Rike off UT senior starter Greg Gompf. The Mt. Gilead, OH native tossed the first four innings and allowed five runs on five hits.
The Bulldogs tacked a single run in the second, before UT junior Scott Boley, who led the visitors with three hits, ripped a RBI single to make it a one-run contest, 3-2.
On this day, Louisiana Tech seemed to stay one step ahead of the Rockets and tallied a pair of runs in the fourth to send Gompf to the showers and help establish a three-run cushion.
Toledo did not go down without a fight, though, and RBI's from Scott Boley and sophomore Jake Oester in the fifth and another from Boley in the seventh briefly tied the score at 5-5.
In the bottom of the seventh, the first three Bulldogs reached base off UT freshman reliever Justin Collop, before Albie Goulder cleared the bases with one swing for a grand slam.
Louisiana Tech added two insurance runs in the eighth on a two-run home run by Courtney Jones to make the final score 11-5.
Collop (1-1) was tagged with the loss, as the Wayne, MI native surrendered four runs on three hits in two innings of relief duty.
LT's Andrew Alsup (3-0), the second of three pitchers utilized by the home team, was awarded with the victory.
The Rockets return to action tomorrow and face Dallas Baptist at 6:00 p.m. (CT)
