Toledo Drops 18-5 Decision at Ohio State

COLUMBUS, OH - Toledo (7-10) suffered an 18-5 setback at Ohio State (14-3) this afternoon at rainy Bill Davis Stadium.
Seven of the Buckeyes' recorded at least two hits in the non-conference match up as the home team finished with a season-high in runs scored and hits (21). Justin Miller led the way with four hits and four RBI's.
Toledo started strong and opened the scoring in the second inning on a RBI single by freshman Tim Krofcheck. Senior Ryan Laude began the rally with a leadoff single, followed by a walk to sophomore Jake Oester to put two runners on base. Krofcheck then stepped up to the plate and delivered a two-out single to left field to score Laude with his second RBI of the season.
The Buckeyes quickly responded with five runs on six hits in the bottom of the second frame to end the afternoon for junior RHP Mike Ellis. OSU sent nine batters to the plate and at one time six straight hitters reached base. Big hits in the inning were a two-run triple by Tony Kennedy and a two-run single by Matt Angle.
OSU added to its advantage with four runs in the third inning and two more in the fourth to make the score 11-1. The home team collected seven hits in the two frames to help establish the double-digit cushion.
The Rockets continued to play hard and a RBI single off the bat of sophomore Josh Colliver in the fifth inning made the score to 11-2.
Unfortunately, the Buckeyes retaliated with five runs in the sixth frame and two more in the eighth to again hold a double-digit cushion.
Toledo, though, fought to the bitter end and three runs in the ninth made the final, 18-5. Freshman Josh Wierzba had a two-run single and Laude added a RBI single in the inning.
Ellis (1-1), one of six UT pitchers used, suffered the loss and allowed five runs on five hits in 1.1 innings of action.
Freshman Josh Johnson finished 3-for-5 and ran his hitting streak to a team-best 11 games, while junior Scott Boley, freshman Ryan Satterlee, Laude and Krofcheck each tallied two hits.
OSU's Josh Edgin (1-1) was credited with win in a planned rotation, throwing the first three innings.
The Rockets return to action this weekend, Friday-Sunday, Mar. 30-Apr. 1, when they travel to Athens, OH to battle Ohio in Mid-American Conference action. The first pitch on Friday from Bob Wren Stadium is slated for 6:00 p.m.
