TOLEDO, OH - Toledo (5-6) claimed a 8-1 victory against Findlay (5-9) on Wednesday afternoon in its home opener at chilly Scott Park.
Senior RHP Todd Thomas (2-1) was superb for the Midnight Blue and Gold, hurling six innings against the Oilers. Thomas limited the visitors to one run on four hits with three strikeouts.
Junior RHP Chris Fields came on in relief and worked two scoreless frames in the seventh and the eighth, before freshman RHP Justin Collop slammed the door shut in the ninth to help the Midnight Blue and Gold snap its four-game losing streak.
The Rockets also did a number with the bats against four Findlay hurlers, pounding out eight hits. Seven of the nine starters collected a hit and junior C Sean Boley (2-for-4, RBI) tallied a multi-hit contest.
Toledo opened the scoring in the second inning on a RBI groundout by sophomore SS Jake Oester. With one out in the frame, sophomore 1B Josh Colliver and Sean Boley tallied back-to-back singles to put runners at the corners. Oester then grounded out to the Oilers' shortstop to plate Colliver and collect his third RBI of the season.
The Oilers tied the score at 1-1 in the sixth on a RBI double by Chad Geuy. Findlay's effort was aided by a UT fielding error.
The Rockets quickly retook the lead for good in the bottom of the sixth with three runs on the strength of three hits. Freshman RF Josh Johnson and Sean Boley did the majority of the damage in the frame with RBI doubles.
UT then finished off its scoring in the seventh inning with four runs. The home team sent 10 batters to the plate and used RBI's from junior LF Jake Swint, junior 3B Scott Boley, Colliver and Oester to make the final score 8-1.
The Rockets return to action tomorrow when they travel to the "Queen City" to battle Cincinnati. The first pitch from Marge Schott Stadium is slated for 4:00 p.m.
