Toledo vs. Miami (OH) January 27, 2007
Head Coach Stan Joplin
"We're happy with the win and protecting our homecourt. We put some distance between ourselves and Western Michigan. One of things we want to do is win our division and like every other team does have the best record in the league. It's nice for our seniors because they're never beaten Miami. You have to give Miami a lot of credit. They don't turn the ball over very much and they're very disciplined and fundamentally sound. We knew it was going to be a battle."
"It's nice for us when Justin Ingram and Keonta Howell don't play well and we still win. It's really huge for us. Tyrone Kent made some big threes and had eight rebounds and they had to pick their poison."
"It's nice to see our crowd back and the players can really feed off that energy. We really have to make that a homecourt advantage. We haven't had that here in a long time and hopefully more people will keep coming out and give us an even bigger homecourt advantage. We've been winning our home games but we would like to really dominate and continue to have success at home. We want teams having to play their best game and they still might come up short. It really helps to have all those people when things aren't going well and that gives our players a second wind and keeps them motivated."
Senior guard Justin Ingram
(on tying a school record with a 7-0 MAC start)
"Coach has been telling us for the past couple days that the last time we have gone 7-0 in the MAC was when he was playing. We want to be able to put it into his face on Wednesday by going down to Ohio and trying to get a victory. That is something that he didn't do, so we are going to try to do that and do the best we can do and hopefully we will come up with that win on Wednesday."
(on if it's special to tie the record)
"I guess it's sort of special because no other team has gone this far but we wouldn't be satisfied if we are the team that went 7-0 at the beginning of the season and then trailed off at the end. We want to keep the way that we are playing going so that we can be 16-0 and be 3-0 in the MAC tournament and make it to the NCAA Tournament, and then it will be really special."
(on defending Miami's offense)
"We just wanted to apply constant pressure. Coach Joplin told us before the game it's not going to happen at the beginning of the game because they are going to try and slow it up. But we kept the pressure up and wearing them down. At the end of the game they were more tired than we were because that's the type of game we like to play and are used to playing."
Junior guard Kashif Payne
(on the crowd)
"It was lovely; it helped us out a lot. They came out to support us and brought a lot of energy and we are just going to keep it going."
"They wanted to slow the ball down. One of the keys to our victories is to keep the ball at our pace so we wanted to speed it up. In the second half, we got a couple of transition baskets and just started running and bringing a lot of energy."
(on being 7-0 in the MAC)
"It's great but we aren't satisfied. We want to keep winning and continue the streak. Every team's going to give us their best shot and we just have to be ready."
(on defending Miami's offense)
"Coach told us to be patient on defense and not to go for a lot of steals. In the long run they were worn down and they got tired so we were able to convert off the turnovers."
Miami Head Coach Charlie Coles
(on the crowd)
"It was a special night for the MAC tonight with over 8,000 fans. We were really glad to be a part of it and I think our guys were excited about playing here."
(on Toledo's defense)
"Toledo's just an aggressive team. They like to force turnovers and that's how they've become a very good team. They get you to throw the ball to them and then they go down and lay it in."
(on the turning point in the game)
"Early in the first half we were getting good shots in our offense. If we could have stayed away from the turnovers I thought we were in good shape. I think the game was decided in the first half when we were up 17-11 and our offense was rolling, but then Toledo turned some of our passes into layups. I thought once they got even they played with a lot more confidence."
(on Toledo's success)
"They're playing with about as much confidence as anybody in our league. They got a little bounce to their step. They're a good ballclub."
