Toledo Sweeps Doubleheader With Dayton

Dayton, OH - The University of Toledo softball team traveled south on I-75 to Dayton to take on the Flyers and came away with a pair of wins. The Rockets took game one 8-7 and game two 9-3. Toledo improves to 10-20 with the wins. Valerie Moxim hit a grand slam in the first game and a three-run homer in the second game to help lead the Rockets to the victories.
After Dayton scored three runs in the bottom of the first, UT threatened in the top of the fourth after a double by Sara Agnew put runners on second and third with one out. Moxim scored UT's first run on a passed ball before a groundout ended any further scoring.
The Rockets loaded the bases in the top of the fifth and a hit by Alison Hess scored the first run. Moxim then hit her grand slam to gave the Rockets their first lead of the game at 6-4.
After the Flyers came back to tie the game at 6-6 in the bottom of the fifth, Toledo stormed back with two runs in the sixth after a Dayton error.
The Rockets were led by Moxim who added two other hits beside her homer, to finish 3-4 with two runs and four RBI. Alison Hess finished with two hits and two RBI. Leslie Stong and Denise Van Vossen each had a pair of hits for Toledo.
On the mound, Sierra Pereira got the win to improve to 5-9 on the year.
In the second game, Hess got things started for the Rockets in the top of the first with a homerun. After Dayton went ahead 3-1, a single by Brie Ford in the top of the fourth scored two runs for UT to tie the score at 3-3.
Moxim, who leads the Rockets in homeruns with seven, put the Midnight Blue and Gold ahead for good with her three-run shot, in the top of the fifth.
Gina Muratori had a double that scored two insurance runs
Four Rockets had two hits each, led by Gina Muratori, who went 2-4 including a double that scored two runs. The senior also crossed the plate twice herself. Hess, Ford and Whitney Erickson also had a pair of hits each, with Hess scoring three runs.
Stephanie Moore got the win on the mound to improve to 5-11.
The Rockets return to action on Friday with a home doubleheader against Mid-American Conference rival Akron with the first game starting at 1 P.M.
