Toledo Drops Two Matches to Ranked Teams

New York, NY - The Toledo men's tennis team traveled east this weekend to take on two ranked opponents and lost both matches. On Saturday, the Rockets lost 7-0 at #60 Penn State, while on Sunday UT lost 6-1 at #75 Columbia. All of the Rockets' losses this season have comes to teams that were ranked at the time.
On Saturday at State College, PA, the Rockets (10-7) were swept for the second year in a row by the Nittany Lions. Sophomore Chris Clark and freshman Jared Miller were the only UT netters to win a set. Clark took the opening set 7-6 (5) at second singles against Malcolm Scatliffe, but lost the last two 6-4, 6-1. Miller lost his opening set to Michael James at the fourth singles flight, but came back to win the second 7-6 (4). James, however, was able to rebound to dominate the third set 6-0 and win the match.
Against the 75th-ranked Columbia Lions in New York City on Sunday, freshman Mohammed Al Nabhani won both of his matches to lead the Rockets in the 6-1 loss. Al Nabhani and senior Tony Tran started off with an 8-4 win at first doubles over Jimmy and Marty Moore. At first singles, Al Nabhani again got the better of Jimmy Moore in a three-set marathon 6-4, 4-6, 7-6 (4), to pick up the Rockets' only point.
"We weren't firing on all cylinders this weekend," Head Coach Al Wermer said. "We hit a bit of a lull after a long stretch of triple-match weekends. The Columbia match was a real dog-fight, Mo (Al Nabhani) had a special performance."
The Rockets are staying in Times Square and will spend two days touring the New York City area with UT on spring break this week. The Rockets will next be in action with the official start of their spring season at the newly renovated UT Varsity Courts on Friday, Mar. 24 against Dayton at 7 P.M.
