Toledo, OH - The University of Toledo head women's softball coach JoAnn Gordon announced today the hiring of Bill Gilbert as the pitching coach for the Rockets.
"I am very excited to have Bill on board," said Gordon. "He brings a wealth of collegiate and international coaching experience to this position. He has already made an impact on the pitching staff in the month he has been here!"
Gilbert enters his first year at UT and his tenth year as a college assistant coach. After playing in the men's fast pitch game, he started coaching in the state of Washington. He coached in the Junior and Senior High schools in the early `90's and moved to Bellevue Community College in 1997 and again in 1999.
Gilbert then moved to the state of North Carolina to continue coaching at NCAA Division II Catawba College for one season and the University of North Carolina at Pembroke for three seasons.
During the summer of 2000, after his first year at UNCP, he had a chance to coach a club team in Enkoping, Sweden. While in Sweden he was offered the opportunity to coach the Swedish Junior National team. That Junior National team won the Scandinavian championships and placed fifth in the European Junior championships.
In 2004, Coach Gilbert moved up to NCAA Division 1 and Monmouth University in West Long Branch, New Jersey. That year the team's ERA dropped by almost one full run from the previous year as that team finished in third place and a trip to the Northeast Conference play-offs. From there he coached the University of Maryland-Baltimore County as that school had just recently left the Northeast Conference and was now competing in the America East Conference. While at UMBC, that team went from eight place (the year before he arrived) to sixth place to third place, a 46 win season and a first-ever trip to the America East conference playoffs.
His home is currently near Charlotte, North Carolina but he is in the process of moving back home to the Midwest. He grew up just north of Toledo in Redford, Michigan. He graduated from Purdue University in West Lafayette, IN with a B.A. in Political Science.
Coach Gilbert is married with 2 children; Sarah, 15 and Carys, 12.
